I'll give a long-ago duopoly example. I interned at a group that had 5 stations in our Hemisphere's largest market. One was MOR, one was ranchera, one was tropical. But two were Top 40.

Huh? the difference was that one Top 40 played half songs in English and half in Spanish while the other played all Spanish Top 40 hits. There was 50% overlap, but different audiences.

So even if a format has the same name, the execution and playlist differences make it a different station.
Absolutely true. I don't see them as the same.

That actually does have some merit. Should time change, and that number shrink, and we might see Kiss fade away into something else.

No because Kiss is constantly changing. The songs change every week, new songs come in, old songs get dropped, and so the goal is for the age of the listeners to stay the same, but the specific listeners will change.

As for it being different companies, I agree. That's why I bring up my comparison of the Country stations and in my original reply about Jamin and Hot. The same can be said about WZLX and WBOS.

They're different stations with different formats owned by different companies. Just listen to the stations and you'll hear how different they are. WZLX and WBOS are very different. There's a reason why WZLX is more popular. Jamin' & Hot are very different stations in many ways. Urban CHR is different from Urban AC, in the same way that Mix and Kiss are different.

Your second part, we are in complete agreement. That's all a normal competition between two radio companies.

Your first part, where I agree, I still observe that should a generation outright revolt against the current dominant sound, it will hurt Kiss in the short run. The same can be said if the trend of Pop listeners goes the same direction of Rock and Alternative listeners. Should they all migrate to streaming, satellite, or internet, Kiss will also end up with the same fate as other defunct legacy stations in the area.

The one common characteristic I see in today's world with all of the sources for music and media is that people don't all do one thing. They don't all eat hamburger, they don't all drive Chevys, they don't all watch one TV channel, and they don't all listen to one thing for music. That's not going to change. As long as Kiss remains in touch with what people want to hear, they will continue to have listeners. Those listeners may also stream music for a few hours or they may buy some vinyl for all I know. But nobody has an exclusive on music, so as a result people will use whatever media is available. Since FM is free and omnipresent, it will continue to be one of the choices.
