Another Bonneville F***-Up!

What another brilliant idea! Let's dump our 2.0 (and rising) share country format where we're the only game in town (not to mention one of radio's most loyal format audience bases) for Jack-Bob-Max and drop to a 1.4 share. And yes, that's the good news! Since they switched on May 11, exactly half the book is country and half is Max. Do the math... Max pulled no more than a 0.8 in the last half of the book.

Hey...nice message board and thanks for the ratings roundup.

What simonsays is right on the money. Assuming that country just won't work in the Bay Area is absolute BS. Maybe the decision was made to block Infinity from coming in with their jockless Jack format. Who knows? Now, an entire culture of people who happen to like the music have no where to turn other than to look up to the stars and subscribe to XM or Sirius. Brilliant, huh? Even as a radio industry lifer, the next vehicle I buy will definately have a reciever, an iPod dock and a radio. Which device I use will be based entirely on how good the radio product is. The industry had better get on the ball and soon..
suck it up, hire the talent back and have a little fun.

Calculating ratings is not as simple as that. You have to take the trends, extrapolate the individual months, and then recombine and average.

David Eduardo could explain the process in detail; I have a feeling that if I tried, your eyes would glaze over and then I would have wasted my morning ...<P ID="signature">______________

I realize that it's very early, many of the new Variety Hits stations such as Max haven't even had a full book yet. Still, I can't help but notice that many of these stations are getting off to poor starts, especially considering how trendy this format is and how much hype there is. San Francisco, Boston, and Detroit are three examples.

Here's another related thought. Would Variety Hits have gotten off to a better start in SF if Infinity would have beaten Bonneville and put a "real" Jack station on? The Jack in LA showed instant growth from it's first trend and ended up having a great book,#1 English language 25-54.

As you say, it's probably too soon to tell, even though radio's definition of "long-range planning" is somewhere around 72 hours.

The other thing to note is how Bonneville seems to be able to squeeze the life out of any format. Bonneville is very competent at the mechanics but, ultimately, their stations just have no spirit or life to them. Where it's weepy AC, it doesn't matter and Bonneville does well. But country, or "Max/Jack/etc", or most other formats requires something more than broadcasting to a checklist.

Re: Another Bonneville F***-Up!

Nor is programming as simple as "let's try an ipod shuffle because it works in Canada". Bonneville's problem is management... as in not billing our budget? Then it must be the format... never mind country was and continued to trend up to the end. God forbid we might examine our sales department. Speaking of bad management, who the hell listens to KOIT-AM? At a minimum, they could have moved country to 1260 and probably retained half the audience, those who now have gone to ipods, DirectTV, XM, Sirius, etc...

Re: Another Bonneville F***-Up!

Hmmm...I thought I was the only one who felt dumping the country format was a stupid idea. Bonneville must've thought that beating KFRC to the punch on Jack would produce better results. We'll see how the move pays off by the end of the Fall book.

You can't really grade it right now...But, the Bear was just starting to come into its own...

Dam straight, The BEAR was just a cub, it would have turned 2 years old this august, with JD in the afternoons, they really had something, I also thought Forrest Kelly was good too, and they canned him like tuna. They also had some of the most attractive promotions team around.:) 957-THE-BEAR!!! Seems like my most fav. stations have tanked thanks to bonneville, Z957, and The Bear, dispite "the drive", what a mistake that experiment was. I say bring back KRQR-The Rocker!!!

I was impressed with the slow but steady growth of the Bear. Slow growth is a genuine build up of an audience, it's often better than coming on with a bang and then tanking. With a little patience, The Bear could have been a good station for Bonneville. Instead they traded it in for the flavor of the month and so far (I know it's early) they are not even getting the instant spike in ratings that fad formats are known for.

I agree about the flip. As far as the #'s you throw out about a .8 I'm not sure I can agree. Max is going after a different audience than The Bear was, so this wasn't a real test for them as they probably spent their half of the book getting listeners.

BTW, are they doing any marketing in SF? I heard the station twice now and think it's horrible... just wondering if they are doing anything to drive (ha ha) people to the station.

How did 1550 KYCY do on the rating?

I wonder if this Podcast station even has any ratings left? How did they do in the book? I would be very surprised if it even pull off with a 0.1

Somebody please fill me in with some info.

Re: Another Bonneville F***-Up!

Man! What a great station that was...

Mercy Hawkes, Allen Brooks, Mimi Chen, Peter B and Michael in the mornings... Not to mention John McCrea...

Miss all that...

How can you forget John Mack Flanagan??

Re: Another Bonneville F***-Up!

I don't remember him being on KRQR...

Sure he was there. He suggested to the big shots to change the calls from KCBS-FM since "CBS" had that 'corporate' 'big business' image about it. His voice was all over the place with promos, sweepers, etc. Great radio man.
