Latest Stockton Arbs: AM 1280 Still M.I.A.

Well according to the latest arbitron ratings, KWSX-1280 again did not make an appearance. What is surprising is that both KSTE-650 & KFBK-1530 were #10 with a 1.5 each and these two stations are simulcasted on 1280. And former simulcast partner, KFIV-1360 was #13 with a 0.9. Wow, No one wants to listen to AM 1280, no matter what format they tried. The last time, 1280 got any type of ratings at all was in 2000, when they were oldies "Kool 1280". I also want to add that KWG-1230 magically made the ratings for the first time in more than 13 years with a 1.2 rating at #11.

How hard is it to run programming on this station? Why not take the feed of Rush, Hannity and all of the other right-wing hosts and run it through automation that has liners that say Stockton's News/Talk 1280, KWSX (stupid calls for K-six mess). The revenue in Stockton is low because less than 30 percent of San Joaquin County listeners are listening to Stockton Stations. Any advertising from Stockton advertisers on KHOP, KHKK or KATM are counted in Modesto BIA totals...which gives (guess what) inflated dollars for Modesto and pathetic dollars for Stockton.

What do these forward thinking operators do? Glorify Modesto and crap on Stockton. Two cities with similar make-ups...Both seriously hurt by the sub-prime mortgage crash.

Stockton used to be a decent medium-small radio market. I think one of the worst things that AM/FM- Capstar- Clear Channel did was move the operations of 1280 and 100.1 to Modesto back in '99.

I agree with you. Michael, I have a question. Wouldn't it be just cheaper just to have Clear Channel have KWSX go dark? Just a waste of a power bill plus I heard that CC is leasing the land in which the KWSX transmitter stands on from the Gamble Family. (Former owners of the 1280 frequency)

CC has already downgraded KOSO and KMRQ from Stockton which the latter doesn't make since, sence KMRQ will lose Stockton and the benifits to going more south would give a better signal to a area they aready serve ,maybe Turlock will benefit from it, of course MRK make sense that it's either Modesto or Sacramento that gets the revenue with the exception to KWNN,KSTE, and KQOD.
1280 might as well either simulcast or or go dark.

I tried listening to the "Kim Komando" show on KWSX 1280 on Sundays, but the show cut in and out so much, it became hard to listen to. I will go back to listening on KSTE on Saturdays.

The 1280 signal doesn't seem to go far like it used to, especially to the West
at night, where it once roared into Solano County. I evidenced this when I was
in Stockton for most of the day and night (did some research at Chavez Library
in between), and all the Stockton AM signals - except KWG's - have suffered
compared to their output in the early-1980s...

It's clear that CC is not putting ANY money into 1280. It makes sense to sell
the station, cheap or otherwise, to someone who'll give it some TLC (if they
have the money to do it in this recession), or just shut 1280 down...

Meantime, that WAS nice to see KWG show up in the ratings as it did; perhaps the
St. Mary's High School football broadcasts helped?...

Fast follow-up...
I was in Lodi/Stockton Thursday night 1/21, and tuned toKWSX 1280 off-and-on between
6:30 and 11 p.m. during my travels, driving on Highways 12, 99, 5, Hammer Lane and
Pacific Avenue.
Heard nothing but dead air, with ESPN 1280 from San Luis Obispo faintly in the background...

Does anybody at Clear Channel monitor their own stations anymore?

Heard nothing but dead air...

Holy jeebus -- nothing but dead air every time you tuned in?

If I had the money, I would buy KWSX-1280 from CC then swap that station with IHR for KWG-1230. Move all of the EWTN Radio to 1280 while I would revive the Doo Wop Oldies on 1230, or maybe Adult Standards. It might not get Monster ratings but neither does KSTN-1420. KWG would be a labor of love. Ah, I know, it is just a pipe dream.

< sigh! >...That IS a good pipe dream, Sam; and KWG is lower-maintenance compared to 1280, also...

Yes, David...there was "dead carrier" every time I tuned to 1280 that evening...
That would've NEVER happened at the ol' "Great 128" years before. How the AMs have fallen now...

It's not like those plants have been maintained meticulously over the years. I suspect at least some of the ground system has either deteriorated or been stolen. There's a lot of talk about electrical noise interference on AM from light dimmers, CFL's, etc. but when you're 1/2 mile away from the nearest anything out in the delta...

I finally found KWSX's website. talk about about the most basic of basics when it comes to radio station websites. Other than Armstrong & Getty, There is not program schedule or anything. http://www.talkradio1280.com/
