In the recent past, I've heard some talk in regard to whether or not using "LATINO" as a name is a good thing. Some believe that the name puts a limitation on the station when it comes to audience. I did agree with this for a while, until a moment ago when I thought about it and realized; With the type of format they have, what other name could they (sensibly) go by that wouldn't have the station come across as confusing when people tuned in? In other words, when you hear the type of format they have then hear the name "LATINO", you immediately understand everything that's going on and get some idea of what to expect. But lets say, for instance, that they were "Hot 96.3" or "Party 96.3" or..... just 96.3 KXOL and people were randomly just tuning in. Regardless of what was playing when the person tuned in, after about 10 minutes of listening, that person would be very confused with the station.... for obvious reasons... I don't feel I should have to explain that. However, with the name "LATINO 96.3", it would clarify a lot and people would know exactly why things turned out to be the way they were after 10 or more minutes of listening. So, with that being said, I think the name actually helps the station in this case because people understand it, and in addition to that, it also helps to grab the demographics they are mostly going for faster than if they just had some "random open definition" name.
With a format like 96.3 KXOL, the station name better be something to help explain why you are (or will be) hearing the content you hear when you tune in.
