Launch of Rev Al Talk Show Announced

The Boston Globe reports:

Two powerhouses of urban radio are teaming up to launch an African-American-centered talk-radio network, the cornerstone of which will be programming hosted by the Rev. Al Sharpton.

Baltimore-based Radio One, the nation's seventh-largest radio company, and Reach Media, which owns and syndicates the highly successful ''Tom Joyner Morning Show," aim to roll out the network after the first of the year. Radio One owns a controlling interest in Reach Media. ...

If all goes as planned, the fledgling talk network will begin broadcasting on as many as 10 of Radio One's 70 stations, including AM outlets in Baltimore, Detroit, Miami, Cleveland, Washington D.C., and a handful of other cities. The programming would also be offered to stations not owned by Radio One. ...

While programming has not been finalized, Liggins said that the as-yet-unnamed network will provide programming from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

As the centerpiece of the new programming, Sharpton is expected to be topical, if not entirely political. ''Life is political," said Liggins. ''Rush Limbaugh is political. Howard Stern has been political. That's the nature of the human existence. We won't focus exclusively on politics. We'll deal with the human existence of African-Americans in the broader landscape of America." Sharpton's show is scheduled to air weekdays from 1 to 4 p.m.

Radio One has radio stations in 22 markets targeting Black audiences plus the TV One Cable Network. Sharpton had announced a syndication deal with Matrix Media, which apparently fell through. Sharpton currently does a weekly show on WLIB, New York (station operated by Air America Radio).

Elder more than likely couldn't be added at the network level...he has his own deal with ABC.

And given the political pulse of most African-Americans, I doubt that there'd be much of a national audience for show hosted solely by a conservative black host(s) (see Elder). Doesn't mean they wouldn't/couldn't have Black conservatives contribute as regular guests, but it's not as if R1 the Fairness Doctrine to worry about :)

RadioOne already has a few talk hosts working for them who should/could get a serious shot at national exposure: Joe Madison, who's already working for Washington DC & Baltimore's WOL Radio and heard nationally on XM channel 169, "The Power". Also, there's Lincoln Ware on Cincinnati's WDBZ "1230 the Buzz".

When did Radio One buy WDBZ? I thought Blue Chip owned it...

Anyway, Mr. Ware wouldn't have to change much...his show airs on the Cincinnati station in the 10 AM-1 PM slot listed as not filled yet. He was rumored to be a candidate for WCKY/1530's new liberal talk format, but signed a new deal with "The Buzz" before Clear Channel came calling.

I thought Larry Elder's show got cancelled.

Oh, that was his TV show.

One in the same. Although, you're right in that AFAIK, Radio One still LMAs WDBZ from Blue Chip, the last station it actually owns.
