Launch of Upper Midwest Airchecks Website

I am pleased to announce the launch of the Mostly Upper Midwest Airchecks website. The website includes more than 50 airchecks of Milwaukee radio from the 1980s as well as airchecks from Chicago, St. Louis, Duluth, the Fox Cities, WI, Madison, and La Crosse, WI. I also strongly welcome the contributions of others so this website can become an even more significant archive of Midwest radio.

Just a suggestion but I noticed many of your airchecks are scoped. You might want to put that as a note on your website. Collectors like myself like mostly unscoped, unedited airchecks.

Thanks for the suggestion. I like unscoped airchecks too. The only problem is that I can't afford to pay the royalty fees for posting unscoped airchecks as mp3 files.

I enjoyed the aircheck of WKAU. My first year of college was at UW-Oshkosh and that aircheck was recorded at the exact time I was there. It brought back good memories. I remember John Reynolds did afternoons at the time, he had a feature called the "Reynold's Wrap"..he has long since been the OM/PD at WNKS/Charlotte NC but I'll always remember him on KAU.

WKAU was great because it was live. WIXX was automated back then but still very popular. By far and away the station I heard the most at the time was 96.7 WAHC (Super Hit 97...Wisconsin's All Hit Connection). That was a very fun station to listen to

I'd love to hear some airchecks of WISN from the late 70s early 80s when they ran an oldies format.
They sounded really good in NW Indiana.

Unlikely due to royalties issues. I may post some at the Facebook page mentioned here but right now I am focused on uploading what I have on my page.

If there is anything you are particularly interested in at my site send me an e-mail (address at the website) and I would be pleased to send you an unscoped file.

Thanks for the update, I didn't realize you added so many airchecks to your site. I liked listening to all the nightly signoffs, everything sounded so official.

My favorite aircheck was the WTMJ-FM to WKTI format change. It was refreshing to hear such a serious sounding, well thought out announcement. So different than the silly stunts we get today when stations flip formats.

I also enjoyed the 1976 WKTI airchecks. I listened to I-94 a lot that year and it brought back good memories. Actually at the time I thought they were quite a boring station because of the automation. But my dad liked the station so I ended up listening too. He had to be one of the only WTMJ-FM listeners who stayed loyal to the frequency after the format change.

Doobie Brothers-Taking It To The Streets was on that aircheck,I totally remember how often they played that song. If that aircheck was recorded a couple weeks latter I guarantee Starland Vocal Band-Afternoon Delight would have been on there. That was by far the song WKTI played the most in the Summer of '76. I also liked hearing the Great Lakes Dragaway commercial, They had to be the #1 local radio sponsor at the time, at least on younger leaning stations.

On the 1983 WAPL aircheck you can hear David Lee voicing a spot. He would latter go on to work at WQFM. He has such a cool voice. For the last several years I have heard him on on Westwood One NFL football broadcasts...voicing the imaging.

Icy, Maybe you can start a competitor to them (until they get you for copyright charges). Nohing ever pleases you, does it?
