Is Dave Schwartz a replacement for Laura? When Access Atlanta mentioned Bill Gaines departure they mentioned that Laura might be leaving in June. I see that he is working the weekend shift today. I never watched The Weather Channel so I don't know if he is any good or not. I attribute his constant 'uh' on tonights 11pm broadcast to being nervous.

It's great to see Dave Schwartz at CBS Atlanta. He was a 16 year veteran at TWC and was incredible there. I wish him all the best on his new gig.

Don't know when but her bio has been removed from the website. I am sad to see her go. I hope she ends up on a station that appreciates her talent.

Laura Huckabee was so cool and down to earth on-air. She "actually" knew her stuff when it came to severe weather coverage. Out of all the female talents at CBS ATLANTA, she was the best. Who is CBS ATLANTA's chief meterologist, Greg Majewski???

Laura decided not to renew her contract... the powers that be at WGC-hell are too much in love with the b-movie actor Dagmar. Dagmar can do no wrong in management's eyes... and I hear the news director is a gawd-aweful people person. Greg Majewski is the "managing" meteorologist, but for the sake of arguement, Dagmar is the chief. Heck, the word is that Greg is telling Dagmar in her ear (via IFB) what to say during severe weather!

WGCL has seen better days in the weather department... Gene Norman, John Wetherbee, John Doyle and Laura. Good luck to Laura.

I remember that team. I also remember Monica McNeal. She was the weekend meterologist.

As I live in Central Florida during the summer months, I have become acquainted with Chris Martinez. He's not half-bad. He has grown a lot as a weather anchor in the past few years at Fox 35 in Orlando and I'm sure he'll do well here in the ATL.

Also, on a related note... has anyone noticed CBS Atlanta going after the local Hispanic viewership? Two of their meteorologists (Jennifer Valdez and now Chris Martinez) have Hispanic surnames. Additionally, they have scrolled weather warnings in Spanish and English during recent sever weather events. Hispanics in metro Atlanta are grossly underserved by media outlets. Atlanta sports not one Spanish-language full length newscast produced locally nor a single English-language station actively courting Hispanic viewers. This could be a breath of fresh air...

Dave Schwartz was pretty decent on-air. His personality really shows whiles he doing the weather. From Weather Channel days as well as at CBS Atlanta he'd always say "my friend" during his segments. Why didn't they keep him? Doesn't he have the most experience out of the entire wetaher staff at WGCL?

WUVM-LP 4 (Azteca America), on Comcast 249, has local news in Spanish produced by INN out of Davenport, IA (INN does the news, anchored out of corn country, in English for WLTZ/Columbus, WPGA-TV/Macon, and WZDX/Huntsville to name a few). For a while around 2000, WSB-TV had their 6 PM news translated in Spanish via SAP. WUVG 34 (Univision O&O) does brief updates, but no full length news (they did promise a full news operation when they took over in 2002). There also was the short lived Georgia Teve, which partnered with WAGA. WGCL just saw an opprtunity to put scrolls in Spanish...and did so.

About Dagmar...the GM is protecting her. I suspect Steve Schwaid has a verbal agreement to where he can do anything he wants with the newscast...as long as Dagmar as chief weather forecaster.

Point well taken ... there are some options. However, Azteca's newscast are inconsistent. I can't tune in every night and expect it to be on. Sometimes the continuation of the newscast from DF runs in the local newscast slot. Univision does have their local updates, however, after speaking with an acquaintance there, they have no plans are starting a full-length newscast. Georgia TeVe was a nice idea, however it was on expanded digital cable. Your average, in-town "hispanohablante" is more likely to watch TV over-the-air. The point is that Atlanta Hispanics are severely underserved when it comes to news and information. It's a sad fact that I hope will change soon. Perhaps WGCL will continue to market itself and make itself of service to Atlanta's growing and influential Spanish speaking population.

I wonder if a station would consider airing a Spanish-language newscast in the evenings on a subchannel. Probably only WSB has the resources to even consider it at the moment.
