Laurence Gaines, Producer The Bev Smith Show, Dies

http://www.radiofacts.com/2009/11/11/laurence-gaines-producer-the-bev-smith-show-dies/

Laurence was also a producer for Lynn Cullen and Doug "Uncle Dougie" Hoerth back in their WTAE-AM Radio days. He was a great talent and a very funny guy. Some of the best radio I ever listened to was Uncle Dougie and Laurence on WTAE and WPTT.

Lynn spent a good part of her hour today on her Pittsburgh City Paper internet show today talking about Laurence.

I was sad to hear of his passing. My sympathies to his family and all of us who will miss hearing him.

I worked with Laurence at WTAE for a short time in the mid to late 90s. We stayed in touch, on a daily basis even, for long stretches ever since then.

What people heard from Laurence on the radio with Doug, Lynn, myself from time to time, and others was hardly even the tip of the iceberg. Laurence was an amazingly talented individual. He was an incredibly quick thinker and such an intelligent and well rounded person. His knowledge spanned from the inane to the complex. And he was always the best at having meaningful and thoughtful discussions that went way beyond the surface of an issue, many of which were very real and personal for himself and others.

Laurence never got a chance to truly shine on Pittsburgh radio - or in radio in general - and that's a shame. What he did do with the opportunities he was given was nothing short of remarkable. I am not sure if anyone who listened to him or if most of those who knew him ever really understood the man. He was shortchanged by the world, to put it succinctly.

I am deeply saddened by his passing. I can only hope that he is at peace now.
