Laurie Cantillo exits WABC

Can't say I didn't see it coming. She held her own under Citadel, even after the bankruptcy, but the Dickeys are another matter altogether.

WOR's cume is down in the latest ratings that came out today, looks like replacing Malzberg wasn't the best idea.

An observer far wiser than myself remarked that Cumulus and Clear Channel are not in the radio business; rather, they are in the debt servicing business. All decisions regarding programming, personel and the like have to be seen in that light. Cumulus just put KABC's PD in charge of KLOS in Los Angeles. After a move like that, all bets are off as to who assumes oversight of WABC.

Blow out PLJ, change calls back to WABC-FM, move am programing over to fm, sell 770 back to Disney and it becomes WEPN and now has a signal that competes with FAN and WCBS and they go after baseball.

Or ESPN buys 710 for Buckley. Maybe unloading Malzberg's salary was one baby step toward a future sale? ???

are they any better than clear channel? Figure maybe PLJ will get lucky and they'll get sold again to a company that wants to be in the radio business rather than just be bean counters..

What about Scott Shannon? I know he was (wouldn't be shocked if he still is somewhere in the shadows) a longtime ABC employee. Does he have any pull in circles (broadcasting/financial, etc.) to drum up cash to outright buy WPLJ? You KNOW the guy knows what he's doing and would hit the ground running with something like this.

I have a lot of respect for Scott Shannon. He should look to own WPLJ.

Not to derail the thread, or to get called a jughead talking about things that I know absolutely nothing about....;o)....
But I was wondering about the exact same thing myself. Considering how into the history of radio scott really is, it would make a great fit.

The PD at WABC is basically a traffic cop. Lots of syndication, 2 hours live a week day and some weekend programing. Would a cost cutting company like Cumulus hire a name PD for a job like that? I'm betting NO!

I bet YES. 77WABC is now Cumulus' flagship NTR outlet in Market Number 1. The sale of ABC Radio catapulted 2 mediocre small time media companies into major players overnight; they need to keep up in the big cities or else they're dog meat. Many of the ABC/Citadel/Cumulus Media network shows originate at this station. If WABC sneezes, EVERYBODY catches cold down the line. They need someone good in that drivers' seat. Especially since they're lying without an FM simulcast.

Think of 95.5 WPLJ without Scott Shannon in the drivers seat. Same notation.
