Laurie Cantillo vs. Imus

Dunno about any upcoming 'fight' but Cantillo says "Rachel Maddow is entertaining" which I agree with. As a long-time viewer of Keith Olbermann's 'Countdown' I'm actually finding I like Rachel's "lighter" version of essentially the same subjects better.

Laurie also said Rush was 'entertaining' which I find laughable but, hey, everybody is entitled to their opinion.

You may disagree with his politics, but ratings don't lie. America tunes in...to be entertained (notice I did not say 'informed').

"I hear talk radio moving away from that confrontational style. It's not the same as it was 15 years ago."

"I do think women don't like confrontation as much as some male listeners do."

"I don't see talk radio primarily as ideology."

"I'm looking for people who have their own styles. No one wants to listen to a station where everyone is trying to sound like Rush."

No wonder she left KFYI.

If you are speaking about listeners I agree although a surprising number of males would rather hear an intelligent debate on the issues rather than a shoutfest.

If you are talking about hosts I think women, generally, are most pleasant to listen to in a debate-type discussion. They tend to pick your pocket rather than beat you over the head. At least that's what Rachel does.

One of the problems with male guests vs females is they tend to raise their voice until interruption is possible. One reason I no longer watch Chris Matthews. I've seen several shows with other hosts who don't interrupt their guests and who will chastise a guest if he/she attempts to interrupt another.

And just who listens to AM radio? Men. Darned few women know AM even exists and won't put up with the constant harranging of most talkers. If the Chickboss thinks appealing to women is the answer for AM radio, then the Nurse and I would like to sell her our shares of AMC Motors!

She may buy them, sounds like she's an easy mark lately. She's bought into the Toaster Talk school of broadcasting. C'mon, there must be LOTS of women listening to AM!

I don't get the constant opinion battles between AM and FM.

If I am listening to music there is no alternative to FM but if it's talk or sports etc. (and assuming a "good" signal free of static and interference) it doesn't matter which frequency it's on.

AM is just another button on my dashboard....like FM, CD etc.

If your favorite music has always been played on FM (and if you are under 45, that is definitely the case), you probably won't tolerate the static and limited frequency response of AM for anything but a ballgame. And now that talk and sports are moving to FM (and the Cardinals have been on FM since 1994), most people just won't tolerate AM for any reason.

Those of us who are 50+ can tolerate the limitations of AM since that is what we grew up with. But even people my age (I'm 53) moved to FM as soon as there was a rock station on that dial. In my case, growing up near Indianapolis, that was 1968 with WNAP.

There's a reason why KRIZ and KRUX died: They didn't move to FM when their listeners did. By the mid '70s, there were two Top 40 stations (KUPD and KBBC), an oldies station (KOOL-FM), and an album rocker (KDKB) on FM that pretty much did them in. I'm guessing that even then, KUPD and KDKB had few listeners on their AM sides outside of cars, which were still pretty much AM-only in those days.

So, yeah, the AM-vs-FM battle still goes on, but why? AM lost many years ago. If it wasn't for Rush Limbaugh and wannabees, AM would probably be close to extinction now.

Does this mean the Satellite Sisters are coming back?

Because, I just recently stopped retching at their last show.

I'm a decade older than you Keith but know what you are saying.

I grew up on AM (didn't have an FM radio in house or car until the late 60's) and as they say "didn't know what I was missing". I still remember listening to the same music on my FM (EF MMMMMMM....93.7.....KGO.....Stereooooo.....San Franciscooooooo!!!) and being constantly amazed as how much more "music" there was than on the AM side.

Even so, I don't mind listening to the Oldies on AM because those recordings sound pretty much as I original heard them. And talking on AM is just talking. No biggie. The absence of static and fade on FM is nice but really not a big loss unless you're trying to listen to music.

One of the most disappointing things that happened to me recently is my last two cross-country trips. I don't like to stop so, except for bio breaks and gas, I keep right on driving. It used to be you could latch on to one of the blowtorch 50,000 watt stations and pretty much follow them all the way across country. No more. There were virtually no AM's broadcasting at night with a range any further than the metro FM's I tuned in passing through towns. Large distances of nothing in between. I would have killed for a KOMA-AM (the old blowtorch music format) to keep me company.

That's one reason why I love my XM.

Nurse Jeff and I loved it better before Sirrius screwed it up. But Mel's broke and will probably be gone by next week, so who cares?

Back to topic: The Chickboss can talk about rearranging the deck chairs all she'd like, but the band playing on the Titanic that is AM radio is now in the water!
