Laurie Cantillo's Next Stop: 101.9?

This is speculation... and I can't take credit for this, it was actually the NYRMB moderator that predicts this could happen... In fact, I'm surprised nobody else didn't put 2 + 2 together sooner. Think about it: Randy Michaels had a giant presence at that talk radio convention in Dallas over the weekend. And I had only found out through Laurie's Facebook wall - when I went to postes wishes of good luck for her "next adventure," her words, not mine - that she had been there.

So, given Laurie's body of work at WABC for the last few years, would WEMP benefit from her presence? And let's not forget, Laurie at one point had worked for Harpo Productions - Oprah's company. Currently, WEMP has Liz Aiello, previously an employee of Martha Stewart, in place. Would it mean 101.9 flipping the script on their news delivery for the third time in as many months?

CBS looks like super geniuses by not taking the bait and blowing up one of their profitable FM properties to simulcast 1010 or 880 to get the jump on WEMP.

WEMP's biggest competitor seems to be itself right now.

To be fair, CBS did flip their "Fresh" station in Chicago to a simulcast of their all-news WBBM... of course, "Fresh" in Chicago wasn't necessarily doing as bad as "Fresh" or "Now" in New York was to warrant a flip (yet, anyway) to a simulcast of one of their three AM stations.

Based on the ratings WEMP has been getting she can't do any worse than they are doing right now. Why be the 4th all news station in a crowded market, when local talk is wide open?

Agreed. When the likes of WMCA are beating you, there's no direction to go, but up...

By the by, I believe the "other" all-news station you refer to is WBBR?

It will take WEMP doing some spectactular magic tricks to put a dent in any of the all news stations in New York. The audience is so set in their ways when it comes to their news station listening habits that 101.9 is like a flea on the body of an ocean wave!.

I think that WFFM is exactly right. I think that if they got a lot more cash-flow that they should flip to a New York version of a KFI-style station. Have a few syndicated hosts but mostly stick with local talk. It will appeal to New Yorkers more than the latest Kim Kardashian news (did you listen yesterday) and 4 minute traffic reports (annoying!!!).

Meanwhile, acting PD Chuck Armstrong says there are no plans to undo some of Ms. Cantillo's handiwork at WABC:

Yeah, I know: How much handiwork could you possibly accomplish when a huge portion of your regular schedule is syndicated? Even Chucky admits to this in the above article:

"We have a very strong lineup... Even with the syndicated programs, enough are based here that we have a good local sense."

First of all, Rush Limbaugh has been doing his show from Florida for years - yet WABC listeners still hear a Johnny Donovan-voiced liner over Rush's Pretenders theme song music stating that the show is "broadcasting from high atop the WABC Broadcast Center overlooking Madison Square Garden." Or maybe that's just code for where Johnny is broadcasting from? ::)

Also, Mark Levin's show emanates from the Washington, D.C. area.

John Batchelor? No clue where he does his show from.

Local talk has been absent in New York for many years. There's a hole in the market big enough to drive a freight train through! I actually thought WEMP would be a news-based talk format when it took air.

KFI (LA), KGO (SF) and KIRO-FM (Seattle) are the examples to follow. Mostly local talk intertwined with news blocks. :)

And if you take away WOR, and even Curtis Sliwa's thirty hours a week at WNYM, local talk in New York City would be, to borrow an oft-used term from ESPN New York/1050's Don La Greca, a rumor. :-\

AGREED! And it's a shame! Other markets both large and small have a fair share of local talk but not New York! The New York market can absolutely support a talk station that is mostly or all local. WABC wins only because it has no competition. A mostly local or all local talk outlet would eat WABC's lunch! :)
