Laurie Sanders fired by KOIT

After 20 years Laurie Sanders was let go from her afternoon drive show at KOIT yesterday. She will have a pre recorded last show today. Parent company Entercom also fired 2 sales managers and the promotions director for the SF cluster. In last several months Entercom has fired a number of people from KOIT KFOX and The Game. As a result ratings have been poor and ad sales are way down. Another version of corporate Hari Kari.

I'm sorry to hear that. Though I'm not a big KOIT listener, and I'd hesitate to refer to any of the KOIT jocks as "personalities" - they're "announcers," really - Laurie is a pro, and a nice presence on the radio.

Obviously, like Larry Ickes - she was making the big money, and Entercom is trying to cut costs. Realistically, though - KOIT is about the format, not the DJs - if ratings are down, I doubt the jocks are the reason.

Maybe another radio station will pick up Laurie Sanders...how about KIOI, KOSF or maybe KYLD?

I doubt either Laurie or Larry was making 'big money.' They never paid much over scale there to non-am drive folks, from what I've heard.

What's amazing to me is how these companies come in and gut stations that are successful, just for a few more pennies. If memory serves KOIT is a union station, so they can't go below what is scale there, so how much are they really saving? Right, not much. Funny, they told her that they were going in a different direction. Same thing CC told Bryan Simmons at KOST in LA and they replaced him with some generic sounding guy who doesn't sound as good. Radio is a heartless business and even more so right now...

Sorry to hear about Laurie, I guess Entercom borrowed the same guy that kicked down the doors at KGO with a fire hose and an axe did the same damage to our friends at Entercom.

Remember you are the same guys that will get the "boot" when the they realized you made things worse, don't forget the door swings both ways fellas.

I think the folks making these changes can get a job giving airport travel information on the 2 watt end of the band radio stations ran by the cities. Talk all you want nobody will be listening to you which is what they should be doing now.

Best of luck to Laurie wherever she lands, but I have a hard time with the concept of her on Wild 94.9....

She might surprise you, from what I know she did time at Chicago Top 40 Legend WLS.

Also notable is the release of Jude Heller. Jude is a top notch market proven professional in a strategic job that is being eliminated by the network. Most seasoned veteran radio managers regard Promotion and Marketing as critically important positions at any radio property and I can't imagine what kind of think tank rational inspired the sweater vests at Entercom to consider eliminating this position. Subtle…maybe. However I see this as another cautionary example of radio losing it’s balance.

I guess they had to find money to pay Jack Kulps new 'sidekick' Which I'm sure he is thrilled to have (Extremely sarcasm meant)

What I'd like to know is if Bobby Ocean is still on staff at KOIT? He was doing fill-in work but was never on the station's website. A year or so ago he was the main fill-in for morning drive and he sounded great doing it. Wonder if the new PD even knows about Ocean being on staff?

I'm sorry to have to say this, given the stellar DJs who have worked at KOIT over the years, but Bobby Ocean was the only KOIT DJ who made the station sound like it was alive. Everybody else made it sound like automation. In fact, the afternoon of Tom Saunders' last day, he played a jingle from his rock days and signed off for good. If it weren't for that he would have sounded automated, too. But Bobby Ocean was a fun listen the times I heard him on KOIT.

I believe that a lot of younger PD's think that anyone over 40 can't be contemporary. Now they want someone to show up at a promotional event to be young and good looking no matter how they sound on the air. A lot of guys and gals over 50 are having a tough time getting work. Ocean has been around since the 60's, but age really is just a number as the man sounds so good doing a live shift that it defies imagination why he doesn't get a full time shift somewhere. True, older jocks can't do CHR anymore, but for Oldies and AC formats age shouldn't matter. The sound should matter. If you look at KRTH, they have daytime dayparts all manned by a guy around 60 years of age and they sound great. I don't see it as a real shock that 99.7 KFRC FM lost numbers when they went cheap and let Ocean go. Bet he'd sound great in afternoon drive at KOIT.

Although Oldies 99.7 KFRC brought in JoJo Kincaid. He brought energy and enthusiasm to the station. But I believe the decision was already made to blow up the station for MOViN 997.

Mark Grauer and Sue Hall are the only weekenders on the KOIT website.

Like I said, he was never listed on their website even when he was on more regularly.

Jo Jo Kincaid, great jock, did afternoons at KRTH before going to SF. Great jock, but he's not Bobby Ocean, two very different acts to be sure...

I was wondering when Kenny or his name would pop up on this thread! ;D

Jo Jo is very different from the Osh. Very hard to compare. Jo Jo is an excellent jock. For me though, Bobby Ocean is a living legend. There is an aircheck of Bobby on KFRC FM on aircheckdownloads.com
and I'm pretty sure you can find Jo Jo airchecks as well at airchexx.com if you want to compare. Both great, but not the same kind of jock. Jo Jo reminds me of Bill Lee, not the rhyming part of the act, but the energy.
