Lawsuit against 102.5 The Bone

Saw tonight on Channel 8 and on the Tampa Tribune's website that a couple from out of state is suing WHPT-FM 102.5 for $6 million for an altered photo used on the Cowhead Show's website (among many, many others) with the moniker "Retarded News" ... I'm pretty sure this photo has been on the site for YEARS. Why is it all of a sudden an issue now? Especially since the show stopped calling Galvin's "news" segment by that term more than a year ago.

Smells like another frivolous suit to me. Here's the link:

Seriously though, when you do the kind of tasteless stuff that they do on the Bone, you almost have to expect this sort of thing. Typically Cow's show is more tasteful, dare I say cerebral, than most of the stuff on the Bone. But all of the shows seem to pander to the lowest common denominator. I mean when your shows all joke about shocking "retards", and shooting blow darts into someone's back, or ripping Medicine Man's private hairs off... that's just not entertaining to me. When you consider how sue happy everyone is these days, it was only a matter of time. With that said, while it is distasteful, considering that they aren't using the image anymore, and other people were using the same image, this definitely does seem like a frivolous lawsuit. Maybe this will encourage Cox to mature their programming a little bit. At some point farting into buckets, pouring poo into a homeless guy's open wounds, and bashing mentally challenged people just sort of loses it's appeal. I think the ratings will illustrate this, so far there was a slight increase after the format switch, and since then they've been sliding back down.

But Mr Cedric, your detailed knowledge of all the tasteless, disgusting, and disturbing crap that they pass off as radio entertainment seems to indicate that you in fact listen to this station. I have an excuse not to listen, I am outside (on the high side) of their male demo, but you are not. You say its not entertaining to you, but you are listening. And as long as you listen, they will continue to spew forth this pollutant into the ether. whew, got that off my chest.......... :mad:
 
I'm not especially disgusted by anything they say. If anything disgusts me it's the fact that they could do smarter radio and still be successful. I don't help the show in anyway. I don't support their sponsors, and I don't go to bars to drink crappy beer and watch Pitbull Toddler. I've been a aircheck collector going back 20 years, if there's a popular show, I monitor it to see what they're doing. I spend a lot of time listening to broadcast radio in general. I listen to sports radio, and I hate hearing about professional sports. I listen to Christian radio, and I'm definitely Agnostic. I listen to spanish radio sometimes, and my spanish is terrible. I monitor what all these stations are doing around here. Hell, I'm listening to other radio stations while I'm running the board, usually I'm recording too. I'm sure that sounds really lame, possibly even creepy, but this has been my life for awhile now. :'(
 
As I understand it the family lives in Nashville and the picture being used was only recently brought to their attention. They had no idea.

First let me thank Mike Calta for dropping the whole “Retarded News” thing. Now if he would just stop using the “R” word completely he would make many people out there very happy. Personally I think the Cowhead show just keeps getting better all the time. His interviews are very good and just the way he works with his crew and his timing are outstanding.

As far as the lawsuit is concerned, hey good for the family. How dare someone use an image that makes fun of their son. I home the Cox sisters have to write a big check.
 
Cow hasn't even mentioned it on his show and neither have any of the other shows to my best knowledge. Plus, the last thing he needs is ratings ... he's Arbitron-rated No. 1 in the afternoons.

I was referring to station ratings overall; not any particular program.
