layoffs at CBS stations?

Rumors are going around about layoffs coming at CBS stations (specifically BCN and ZLX). After the Mix/ODS PD merger, will they consolidate more upper management? or continue to under-appreciate their non-management staff??

And this is the REAL REASON why so many radio stations have begun to sound so tired! :-[

What happened in 1996, did I miss something?

JJ Wright...

Considering that this is 2008 and 1996 happened 12 years early...a heckuva lot of changes can go occur over the course of a dozen years!

This includes the business of broadcasting along with any creativity that might be connected to it! ???

But rapking eluded to something specific, if I read it right.
What was the significance of 1996?

I do agree that there have been a few adjustments in the business over the years.
Hey look at the changes that happened between the 50's and 60's. The 60's and 70's and so on. Pull out some air checks from say '64 and compare with perhaps '74, a bit different huh?
I can almost hear the older air talent in 1973 bitchin about how great radio used to be in the decade prior. I remember chatting with Arnie Ginsburg once, when I would see in the hallways at the Big 68 and WROR in '75, and him saying "gawd this business changing .... blah blah!!!"

telecommunications bill loosening ownership restrictions.

On Let's Talk about Radio Bob Bittner used to salute the bill with a toilet flush.

Republican Congress passed with a veto proof majority.

I'm not going to let this opportunity pass. ;-)

Just curious, what kind of things about "the business" were people complaining about back in 1975?

Tight playlists, too many commercials, format (Drake) that didn't allow much personality, consultants (I remember all of us on the air at 'RKO shaking whenever we heard that Paul Drew was in town listening to the station), etc.

For JJ Wright and others who have given this topic a little thought...

I think broadcast regulators and consultants literally shot themselves in the feet the moment tighter playlists and the same foolish liner cards were implemented!

I'm not suggesting that having a station image isn't a bad thing.

But if an air personality happens to be blessed with the ability to share information that realtes to his (or her) audience, it's a damn shame he (or she) has to adhere to the limitations of a 20 second time frame!

Sorry...but the phrases 10 in a row or another 30 minutes of music can get very tired after awhile! :-[

Yes, but for those of us who prefer NOT to put much thought into our breaks, liner cards are a blessing ;D

Sorry but a "true personality" can transmit warmth, and "personality" in 20 or 30 seconds. If you need more, chances are you haven't prepared a break. (or simply don't understand the economy of words) Through history a tightly executed format has consistently beaten the poorly executed personality format every time. No – I’m not saying it’s not OK to talk for 40 or even 60 seconds, but you’d better have a damn good reason.

This is why WRKO (and other Drake formatted stations around the country) kicked ass.

Somehow Dale Dorman, Robert W, Steele and all the rest figured out how to “be personalities”… why don’t radio people “get that” today?
