Layoffs at WABC and WPLJ

Considering the size of the company, I'm surprised it's not more..but thankful. Still, when you know and love the people who where layed off, it sucks. especially considering, if memory serves, cumulus is taking on more than it can handle in the hopes the investment pays off in the future.

They mention WPLJ's Dave Stewart is among those included in the recent layoff at WABC & WPLJ...I wonder if WPLJ will fill Dave Stewart's overnight slot with another DJ or voice tracked service.

Or just music and sweepers

How many stations in the No. 1 market go jockless overnight? Would PLJ be the first?

92.3 Now WXRK-FM appears to be jockless from 3-6am weekday mornings.

101.1 WCBS-FM is voicetracked Midnight-6am Mon.-Sat. mornings.

102.7 WWFS-FM doesn't list anyone on their website as being "in" from 1-6am Mon.-Sun. mornings.

104.3 WAXQ-FM is voicetraked from Midnight-6am (I believe) Mon.-Sun. mornings - or at least weekday mornings.

All of the above are to the best of my knowledge - open to confirmation/clarification/correction.

IMHO the morning drive DJ should start at 5 AM. There are many early birds in the metropolitan area who must start their day very early and wake up very early and would like to hear detailed weather and traffic reports while they listen to music.

Yeah, Q104.3 has someone from Miami voicetracking overnights. He does it for a lot of Clear Channel classic rockers, and says stuff like "your station's website." Funny thing is Maria and Ken also voicetrack on said Miami station.

I remember the night Michael Jackson died KTU went into all-Michael Jackson mode, then went to whatever was already recorded in the overnight, then went back to being all-Michael Jackson. Their excuse was that they didn't "know about the response" that the special circmstances had.

Today's NY Daily News radio column indicates that laid off former WPLJ overnight DJ Dave Stewart has had some job offers from local stations. The veteran late night personality seemed quite pleased in the article-perhaps he is thinking that he can now sleep late at night, and still be working.
As for WAXQ during the wee hours: They are apparently rebroadcasting one of Clear Channel's national channels, The Classic Rock Channel.

The jock manning Q104.3 at night is named Doc Reno. And as liradioisbad points out on the previous page, he's based in Miami ("Big 105.9" - onetime home of Howard Stern's old terrestrial radio show). The fact that Big 105.9 also airs Maria Milito and Ken Dashow (most likely in tracked form) is interesting. Kinda like they got a barter deal going on or something... (And yes, LIRIB, I loathe when Doc Reno refers to "the station site" during talk breaks... :-X)

What Q104.3 should do for overnights is bring in someone a little more local, even if they have to track the jock ("Uncle Vito" from PYX 106 in Albany comes to mind - or at least mine).

CC's Premum Choice, classic rock version. Nothing unusual at all for them.

I realize that; my point is, this is Market No. 1. Don't you think we deserve better than what streamlined jock is being beamed out to the other 98% of the country? CBS-FM realizes this, and that's why they will gladly allow a Joe Causi or a Lenny Bloch to voicetrack so at least we get someone on a New York station that doesn't sound like they're from, well, Miami. (But since it would cost money for CC to do, it's more or less wishful thinking.)

Speaking of Q104.3, WABC/WPLJ sister station KLOS just fired previous PD Bob Buchmann, as well as the subject of Tom Petty's "Last DJ."

By the way, the last live voice I remember on Q104 overnights was Carol Miller a few years ago. They moved her up after one round of Clear Channel budget cuts.

Too bad about Buchmann getting fired. I've been a big fan since the early 80's listening to him on WBAB.
BTW, he's not the subject of the Tom Petty song:

I get what you were saying now. At first it read like Bob was the subject of the Tom Petty song, when in fact you were saying that Buchmann and Jim Ladd (the subject of the song) were both let go today.

Let's hope they don't negate that classy move by farming out her shift to some Premium Choicer. (Okay, so it wouldn't necessarily be "negating" it since they spared her back then when they easily could have cut her... it's just that I've seen so many good people in this business get the boot, and the boot keeps getting shined up every day.)
