Layoffs coming to 95.7

It has been a year since 95.7 The Game added all the local shows and hosts.
The ratings are still pretty bad. Friends tell me their money from commercial sales is worse than some suburban stations like KKIQ and that it is going to lead to some serious "downsizing" because there is way too much red ink.
Entercom has made some brutal cuts at all their other stations in the Bay- KOIT,KFOX, KBLX and, when they owned it, KDFC so this scenario sounds pretty factual.

So when they start the firings and start adding network programs to replace the live and local shows, who should stay and who should go?

I'm guessing the weekend shows will be the starting point, nobody's revenues can go up by adding network shows, this is the beginning of the end

BTW, I heard they had layoffs last week, John Dickinson is no longer with the station, along with several other non on air people

I think this provides some scepticism to the assumption that a non-music format on FM will always trump AM...because younger listenters can't find the button for the AM band.

KNBR is a tradition, a ratings leader, and has play-by-play (Giants, etc.), so even young sports-fans have figured out where to find 680 AM. And in the unlikely event KNBR did start to lose listeners to 95.7, Cumulus could always simulcast on one of their FMs.

Folks,

A return to some sort of music would be great. From a quality point of view, it's foolish to waste a good FM stereo signal on talk radio. Talk requires no "fidelity" to make it good. As such broadcasters would likely be better keeping it on the AM band and promoting the band.

Foolish to who? Who want's another radio station that is playing more of the same 8 songs that are played over and over on the other clone stations? Radio is crap now when it comes to music.

FM or AM, it's very hard to have a successful sports station without carrying baseball play by play. That's just a fact.

They carry the A's so what are you talking about. There are more teams than just the Giants

That is simply not true...markets that do not have a baseball team often do not carry another regional team, and do just fine.

In fact it is a myth that sports station MUST have sports PBP...it does not hurt, but it does not make a huge difference.

It depends on the team AND market...many top sports stations don't carry pro sports PBP, often going for college teams as it is less expensive to carry (in most cases). and they get better financial return.

I am sure KNBR gets a nice bump from carrying the Giants...BUT I know it costs them top dollar, and if they break even with what they give up in regards to revenue for the "rights" then they are forutunate. It may help the image, but it likely does not help the bottom line.

The Game suffers from average shows not the patience it takes to slay an 800lb gorilla.

Tell that to the folks at KNBR 680!

KNBR hates the east bay all together. They rely on SF, the South Bay and the Pen. They talk Sharks more than they do A's or Raiders. It's pathetic and I refuse to support them anymore.

@Interloper...really? When I carried the A's on my NON-sports station, I got a bump of 60,000 in 25-54 cume. I'd call that a pretty nice hit, and one that can mean the difference between a successful station and one that sucks.

The problem is that sports on a punny FM signal is trying to compete against a 50,000 blowtorch, maybe if they moved to 102.1 they would have a chance

A STEREO signal, yes. I wish KQED Radio would turn off its stereo signal except when they have music programs. The multipath is terrible. I get better reception from KALW at 1/100th the power with its mono signal. (KALW does go stereo for its music programs, but not for talk).

But FM is the future of talkradio. It's also the present in most markets, too.

So in the future the only radio formats on FM in the bay area will be talk, news, religion, ethnic, and sports? I hope not!

Are you about doing radio or are you about being a DJ? FM is indeed moving to talk, news, religion, ethnic, and sports. AM radio disappeared off the radar years ago, even for Hispanics and Hindis.

I agree with David. Talk & Sports can prosper on FM. The Games just has poor content/ programming. Their management seems unable to figure it out.
