Layoffs hit WBZ-TV

The article doesn’t reveal any names. Just an undisclosed number of layoffs. According to one of the comments on the story, morning co-anchor Chris McKinnon announced on Twitter that he was one of the cuts.

Viewership for local news continues to decline as the younger generation turns away from broadcast TV. In Boston, have four network affiliates plus one independent station splitting a shrinking news pie. There is no need for this many stations to do local news. I think we’ll see a return to the one-anchor format for some of the broadcasts as stations try to cut costs.

Chris McKinnon seems like a nice fellow (though I’d advise him to cut down on the number of selfies he posts on social media if he wants to be taken seriously as a journalist). At this early stage in his career he might want to rethink betting his future in local TV news. More cuts are coming.

I was having this discussion with some friends yesterday. We are all under 40, and we all agreed that the stories that broadcast TV news tends to cover are of marginal importance at best.

Broadcast TV news spends so much time talking about crime, traffic, and unfortunate incidents in that core city. I personally could not care less that someone totaled their car when they lost control on the interstate, or that there was a robbery at a Circle K 35 miles away.

I hope, going forward, TV stations will look to their success with reporters working from home during the Coronavirus to better distribute their staff to cover the suburbs.
