Layoffs.....

barman said:
Someone on another board posted that lots of layoffs will be occurring after Thanksgiving. Is this true? Why do they choose that time before Christmas to lay people off. It doesn't seem to be in the spirit of the holidays.

When that happens (regardless of the industry), they're not looking at holidays. They're looking at the end of the fiscal year, which now has only a few weeks to run.

I say again, with not an ounce of glee, that the biggest whammy in the history of Bay Area radio is coming soon. I hope the heartless bastards can wait until after the holidays, but I also hope we all are prepared for any eventuality and have a cushion. I wouldn't be surprised if some companies don't even offer nominal severance. It's gonna hurt.
If it is possible I hope all of us have a decent Thanksgiving and a safe and comfortable holiday season to follow.

The entire industry is going to crash. There will be more layoffs. Pay structures, ad rates, revenues, station values and stock prices are all going to hit bottom. and, we won't be the only industry affected.

All media rather it be print or broadcast is going through some challenging times and it will never be buisness as usual even after times improve. I can't think of not one person that will not be effected by the economy. We just have to hold on and reinvent the way we do buisness and pray. We all will get over this but things will never be the same and believe it or not we might even say that these were the good 'ol days. Let's all try to have a wonderful Thanksgiving because we still have alot to be thankful for.

Sorry to bring this up again but I'm unhappy to report some recent news on this subject. The RAB is forecasting a 7% decline in revenue for this year and an even worse 10% decline next year, so it seems the original poster may have been on to something. Let's just hope we all survive this. The RAB report indicated the worst financials for radio since 1954, and that was the year TV pretty much had finished wiping out network radio. This is not good.
