Lazy Jocks

One of more finer arts of being behind the mic is the skill of answering the station phone line.Now as we all know,it is contact to one of the most important items radio really needs right now......listeners.So why on earth do these "lazy jocks" still could not be bothered in picking up the phone.That's what it is there for.To speak to the people who listen to you.Because without them,you have no ratings & then no employment.Come on people,do your job.That's what you get paid for.

well lets see, lately the jocks are not local .. not live they are voice tracked or syndicated.. so thats why no one is in the studio answering the phone lines...

ur2 is probably one of those folks who thinks delilah is live and local in allentown and wonders why no one is answering the WLEV phone after 7. : i am just teasing, but cisco's answer is right on. unless you're dealing with an outfit like WGPA, WDIY, or a college station, no one is going to answer the phones. i knew someone who used to work at a medium market talk station in another city and the stories they'd tell me about the crazy people who would call up asking for paul harvey, rush limbaugh, etc. they had no comprehension what a "syndicated" or canned show was. everything they were hearing was live in that city. stuck in the 1940's i guess. it is a shame though. audience interaction with dj's was a mainstay up until computers and corporations took over in the 1990s. good thing there's still stations like WGPA, WDIY, and the college outfits that actually have a dj that will talk to you.

I thought I saw Shelly Easton grabbing a bite to eat with Delilah the other day.And yes I wait to see if Seacrest goes over to Best Buy to purchase new headphones too. Yes I do know the differents thank u very much.I am pointing the finger right at the local jock.A dying breed u may say.I am a firm beliver of the live & local agenda & I am shocked when I hear PD's say we need more people listening.We guess what ???.How about the bodies u have become more human again to the target u want.And get back to the "1 on 1" media that radio once was.Then u might see a difference.

There are times that WGPA jocks do not answer the phone. I mean how many times a day does one have to talk to Irene?

You do realize that when a computer answers the phone it is called voicemail. Right?

In an industry where live and local no longer matters, radio stations are increasingly voicetracked or carrying syndicated programming. Why would I call... I can talk to my answering machine anytime?

Unfortunately the average listener thinks this way as well. Thus, the advent of the Ipod.

Where there are Lazy on-air people there is LAZY LEADERSHIP.......

your on-air shift is not the time to be "bangin" out spots or trackin' for the station next store.OR cuttin DEMO tape..THE LISTENERS CAN HEAR IT. radio revenues DOWN 10 %.

if things are going so well with voice tracking thing: POST SOME NUMBERS ON THIS BOARD

Pick up the phone ! I answered every call from the moment I got on the air until my shift ended.ASK MIKE EVANS -OR THE 89 other PARTNERS I WORKED WITH at the 10 other stations in the 7 other states(LOL). I stayed off the computer(at least til 9:28)-I was never on the hotline. If you answer every call you won't have to worry about the same 4 callers over and over ( in my case there were only 9 anyway). If we took caller 78for a contest, I answered 78 calls and mined 30 bits for the next week out of it.

It's up to the PD TO CREATE AN ENVIROMENT WHERE THE ON-AIR PERSONALITY CAN BE A PERSONALITY FOR THEIR SHIFT....AND IT'S UP TO THE TALENT TO FIGHT FOR THAT-



regarding voicetrackingD's are the worst ! Does anyone actually believe that a TAPE OF THEIR SCHTICK is
that strong , people will stick around and not listen to an i-pod or CD

It's like playing "BEST OF" SHOWS.........BEST OF WHAT ?

I get it if it's SNL or Grey's Anatomy....or celebrity interviews that killed.....but c'mon people...

and..one more thing about program directors.....Like Morning Personalities...GOOD ONES are hard to find.

Some PD's think they can do everything..MUSIC, ON-AIR, DENTISTRY, SCIENCE, SOME EVEN BELIEVE THEY CAN PROGRAM & MANAGE AN ENTIRE STAFF OF AIR TALENT..and it hurts their station to the end........Some PD's can do a few things very well but don't know WHICH things...and their boss has them doing the wrong things
or just picking up their bosses slack..that's too bad

outside of some Northeast commuting I don't actually hear much "radio in general".... but I hear a nice chunk on NYC commutes, PHILLY, Harrisburg, and an occasional trip to New England....Every now & then there is that "holy crud where did THAT guy(or women) come from?" MOMENT...too comfortable,fun, innovative..too much fone- probably rubbing the PD the wrong way already..lol.....THAT'S NOT GONNA LAST.

but I was not referring to any one station....I was making an observation as a listener on what I see(hear) as a trend...the CONTENT will end up elsewhere and the audience ALWAYS finds it....

I think some PD's are in FEAR OF LOSING their gigs....and that trickles down to an absurd level of creative restrictions...I hear that as a listener , I can see why people are looking elsewhere....cd's, pods,sat,silence,etc.

There are days I even feel bad for sales reps.....well there was that one day....actually it was an afternoon..
