LBI Changes!!!!

101.7 is a better signal? In what way?

Last time I checked, KXGJ (101.7) stopped their HD broadcasting and KIOX had their IBOC on. I think La Nortena was flipped so La Ranchera can have the dominant signal in Houston. Seems to me they give La Ranchera the upperhand over La Nortena.

Well if you go to www.radio-locator.com you could see that they both have a 100,000 watt signal, but the signal of 96.9 fm is closer to houston. Than the one of 101.7 fm. And well almost all hispanics never listen to AM anymore. Thats the reason why that change.
[/quote]

But how is 101.7 a better signal? I'd say it is very non-existent in Houston. Why is this better?

Well, I was able to get rid of KACB for a couple of seconds, and if I was listening right, I heard "El Norte 96.9 y 1230 AM". It has the same voiceover as KBOC. I guess they did change their name then.

Juanito I said 101.7 has a better signal and its also on hd. I also said 96.9 has the same 100,000 watts as 101.7 but I did mention tat 96.9 is closer to houston than 101.7 fm

Well I listened to each of the stations yesterday and today, and these are my observations.

KIOX and KQUE are indeed simulcasting each other as (like Juan said would happen) "El Norte". The funny thing about this is KJOJ/Conroe is also simulcasting "El Norte" but alas, at TOH check only KIOX/El Campo and KQUE/Houston are ID'ed. Tsk, tsk. KJOJ is left out again. So we have lost "Azucar" for the 3rd time. KXGJ and KQQK are also simulcasting each other as "XO". Seems odd to me, as in my experience with KIOX's signal it has better penetration into SW Houston than KXGJ. Liberman was covering Houston better with KIOX and KQQK than what KXGJ and KQQK are covering now. So I would agree with the argument that KIOX is a better signal into Houston than KXGJ even though they are both 100kw. KEYH is now on its own again as "La Ranchera" 850. Feels like I time warped back about 10 years!

Don't know if anyone in Bay City/El Campo have noticed, but KXGJ is having some problems this morning. The audio is delayed from KQQK about 5 seconds, and KXGJ drops off audio about every 3 to 5 seconds like it is losing the feed. Someone may want to look into that. I must say, that this seems like good utilization of the signals that Liberman has at this point, with the exception of "XO" not covering the city completely like it did with the simulcast of 96.9 and 107.9.

Liberman has lost what mind they had......to flip XO to an inferior signal on the south side makes no sense..to take it off 96.9 is a death sentence (with 107.9 getting less coverage from its new tower/antenna and the LPFM out west of Houston PLUS the KIKS issue from Victoria, XO is as good as dead)

BTW here are maps showing the 60dbu coverage of 96.9 and 101.7 from the new tower:
http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM979999.html
http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM979998.html

You can see that 96.9 with its 100KW ERP and KXGJ with its 28KW ERP dont really show that much difference in coverage....maybe 5 miles or so..and thats the 50/50 coverage @ 60dbu.....BUT if KXGJ is still on its old stick south of STNP, that sucks:

http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM1054807.html

Maybe they did this because of the move of KXGJ to the new tower?? (Is someone smoking locoweed there??) Who knows....but either way, its stupid to flip a format that has been there for 5+ years to another (and maybe inferior) signal...

Oh yeah and by the way the Rockets will no longer be on KYST they will now be on 1230am.
Is KQUE breaking away from the simulcast during Rockets games, or will they be available on 96.9 as well? Maybe KIOX will just simply cover the Ricebirds games while KQUE airs the Rockets. I kid, of course.

I live just south of Katy and although I don't speak Spanish, I enjoyed listening to 96.9. I was even able to receive the HD signal. 107.9 is useless out here. Now that its on 101.7, I cannot listen to XO inside my house anymore and it is marginal in the car.

Yes its true LBI made alot of changes.
Im just repeating what everybody said already.
La Nortena which means the northern one changed frequency and named. Now its El Norte, which means the North, 96.9 fm, 1230 am and 880 am.
Yes Azucar is gone, Azucar means sugar, and its based on the words of a famous singer that passed away named Ceila Cruz she always said that word Azucar.
La Raza which means The Race is still 98.5 and 103.3.
XO means love, well duh, they are still on 107.9 fm and now on 101.7 fm also.
La Ranchera which means the Ranch one is on 850 am.
The Only station that LBI did not change is KSEV-AM, 700 am The Voice. Is still the same. Hey but one question, I have information that KSEV-AM is owned by LBI. Is that true?

It was NOT JUST "La Nortena". Its' true it stands for "The Northern" in regular spanish, but it was directed to be a regional name. For example, a person from New York would be a Yankee. The word "North" just appeared there because of the region of Mexico this music is played. It's like calling a station "87.5, The Yankee". It has its background to it.

Not to shure if this is correct. I wouldn't necessarily say the name was extracted from the late Mrs. Celia Cruz. This phrase is used in many songs. Fito Olivarez uses it in many songs.

Not love, it means Hughs and Kisses. XO was there before it even decided to call itself "Musica Romantica....". XO was not chosen because it ment love.

It doesn't mean the "Ranch". Stations called "El Rancho" would be appropiate for that name,
"La Ranchera" means "The Rancher" or "Cowgirl" (because a station in spanish would be feminine,....you know those rules that everyone hates when they learn spanish)

It's too bad that Liberman doesn't have the signal to try a "Casa" clone in Houston to take on "Party". About the only signal close enough to Houston for an experiment like that would be 98.5, and that's a stretch itself.
