Leafs Lunch and Charles Adler

CFMJ (640) Toronto has cut back its Leafs Lunch program, a full two hours devoted to the Leafs all year including in the off-season, down to one hour, adding Stafford at Large at 1 PM in place of the second hour. But this post is actually about another Corus station that carries Leafs Lunch.

CFPL (980) London carried Leafs Lunch from 12-2, followed by Charles Adler. CFPL is now taking a shot at CJBK (1290) by claiming they air Canadian talk in the afternoons instead of an American fluff doctor (CJBK carries Dr. Joy Brown from 1-4 weekdays). However, what is CFPL now airing during the first hour of Dr. Joy on CJBK, in place of the second hour of Leafs Lunch? Jim Rome, an AMERICAN sports talk show host. Not only that, but after 4, CJBK has a local show, while CFPL continues to run Charles Adler with local traffic/weather/news inserts. As far as 1-2 PM is concerned, this is false advertising on CFPL's part, and I would much rather have a local program in PM Drive, which in CJBK's case has traffic and weather together every 10 minutes. CFPL is every 15 during Adler Online.

Oh well, at least 980 has traffic reports and news. Quite a few FM stations in the London market do not, most notably CKDK (103.9 The Hawk), and FM96 to a lesser extent.

It was forced apon them in respect to their decision to go after 590, rather than CFRB.

The change came about because 4-7 is all hockey talk on 640 Toronto now.

As for London, they were left with no other option but to pick up the american feed because there is no Canadain feed to pick up durring the times mentioned.

With respect to London - is Adler Online not available before 2 PM Eastern?

In a perfect world, 980 would have music in that daypart. Ah, the old days...

Adler's show is only 2 hours and begins at 2 pm eastern time. I know there are best of shows that do run on the weekends in some markets.

"Best of" is what killed 640 radio back when it was known as "Talk 640", or as some would call it, "Toxic 40" :D

I don't think Corus wants to go down the Wic radio path that once was, but I wouldn't put it past them...

In respect to music, is there any "AM 740" type station already in the London market?

If not, here's what I suspect Corus radio would do with a London AM station, if it were to add music:
(note that this is a link to a sister Corus station)

London has CKSL (1410) owned by Standard Radio, which plays adult standards and some oldies. However, not only do they have a very, very weak signal, they have next to no news. I don't think there's much room in the market there for an AM740 type station, especially since AM740 has a good signal in the rural area around London and a fair signal in most of the city. Probably the strongest Toronto AM signal here, after CFRB.

Was 1410 once known as the River? It was a good sounding station until I noticed they didn't even have any voice tracks (at least) and broadcast news at 4 in the afternoon on a week day.

Sad, really.

1410 was The River from September 1997 until December 2000, when it became Oldies 1410.

What do you mean, no voice tracks? I'm not highly familiar with the term so do you mean they were live all the time? And it's interesting you mention news at 4 PM, as I remember that as well, considering I was only 14 at the time. Now, when they flipped to Oldies 1410, in 60s style, their newscasts became known as 20/20 News and were broadcast at 20 past the hour. Only between 6 and 9 AM weekdays and on Saturday mornings, though.

Song song ad...song song liner...broadcast news at 4pm in the afternoon. Sad, really.

Oh, gotcha now, you meant "Broadcast News". I missed the first word there. That, along with their terrible transmitter location next to a garbage dump, explains their persistant basement ratings over the past 12 years.

12 years ago, you weren't allowed to own two am and two fm, just one AM and one FM...so could it also be that the ratings are in the basement because the current owner does not want this station to take any attention away from sister stations?

Probably all true. The other three are profitable, and there's not much they can do with 1410. It can't move to FM, and moving transmitter sites is probably not worth the money. But they won't shut it down because it at least gets some money in.
