LEAH BRANDON IS ANNOYING AND UNINTELLIGENT

And finally, just a couple of "For The Records"

1. We were all wrong here. It wasn't Tuesday night. It was THURSDAY NIGHT. November 22. The anniversary of JFK's death. Hence the timely topic.

2. JZ and I never had anything other than friendship off the air. We seriously would've KILLED EACH OTHER. He's been with a girlfriend for over 2 years which I wish he would just marry because she is fantastic. But that's another story for another day.

3. I was never told about which topic JZ would bring up. My entire banter with him for the last 3 years has been ad-libbed at 7:06. We never even talked on the phone about the show.

4. I did not make any commentary at all on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday...........however

By Thursday, there was a lot going on in the studio. Until we find a fulltime host, we will be trying a lot of different ones. (Please forward an aircheck and resume TODAY to Robin Bertolucci if we're missing the next perfect host) Send it to me if you would like and I will place it in her hands for you, and that is a promise. Also, while I may be annoying and unintelligent, I do know what is NOT. I have gotten 4 News Anchors hired at KFI after a couple of our FM stations threw these brilliantly talented people in the trash. And the last one did aircheck sessions with ME after everyone else gave up on her. She now works as a weekend anchor and part time editor. And she kicks ass if I do say so myself. If you need me to critique your aircheck, I will. If you want me to help you, I'm here.

I've been the sole newscaster at night for the last 4 years. I've seen a lot of fill-ins. And let me tell you about KFI if you've never worked there. And if you've never been a host there. It's a freakin' TOUGH gig. Not for me, since all of my stuff is written for me by people with working brains and I just have to put it together and read it, but for an out of town fill-in host, it is really, really tough. Just sitting down in that studio freaks a lot of people out. Robin wants to hear the HOST. Not phone calls. Not a News Anchor injecting a bunch of crap into their show. ONLY the host, unless I am invited in.

This past week, a really nice guy from Houston gave it a whirl. I don't know if you know Chris Baker, but he is a really, really nice guy. By Thursday, he was having a tough time since L.A. isn't anything like Houston. He just had a baby and his wife and kids were celebrating Thanksgiving in another city without him while he was in a pressure cooker. There was nothing going down in the news, the phones were dead, and I didn't want him to leave here feeling like he had failed due to circumstances. I know with another person there to help you, the time goes by a lot faster and you can sometimes have more fun, which is why I jumped in. I guess this is a situation that most great PD's would warn about. No matter what is happening in the studio, the only thing that matters is what comes out of the speakers. In retrospect, it's not my job to make sure that everyone is doing theirs..........but it's not in my nature to be happy about someone else's misery.

Off to work,
Leah "I'll shut the hell up now" Brandon.

Guess what you see is what you get. I said she was bright and articulate and the impression I got when I met her was right on.

I'm a big radio listener and KFI is large part of that... in no small measure to the half-hour newscasts. In short, KFI News makes me feel connected to the current LA goings-on. In fact, I listen to shows like George Noory even though I don't care for Alien talk just to hear the news updates. As a 12-year KFI listener, I can say that Leah fits in perfectly with a long line of street smart no-nonsense anchors. Her voice and delivery are engaging and nearly flawless. I always thought Robin told Zig to talk with Leah to humanize him. I felt Zig was on his way out after he seemingly was forced into taking calls in the last hour instead of monologue. Then a month or so ago, he blew up at Leah at the end of a newscast over a trivial matter and it was clear he would be bailing out. He's a talented guy, but took himself too seriously for the LA/KFI sensibility. Leah, if you bail now for better things, I understand completely, but you would be missed. Your voice at the top of the hour through that heavy compression reminds me that KFI is a 50,000 (um, make that 25,000) watt flamethrower. As the late great Mark Denis once said, "KFI Los Angeles... Maximum Talk, Minimum Wage..."

Well said, indeed! I do feel that overall the talk hosts and news anchors are supposed to interact on all KFI local shows. I suppose that would be to humanize the news anchors, although in Zig's case there was a need for some lightening of the discourse. I will be interested to see if he comes out at some point with the underlying reasons for his abrupt departure. I have subscribed to his website in order to hopefully be updated.

There is a little National Inquirer reader in us all :D

Zig was the man here in Louisville, so therefore I continued to listen to his show in LA via the KFI stream. I loved when he and Leah interacted. I hope he don't give up on talk radio.

You hope he don't give up on talk radio?

Grammatically correct radio folks there in Louisville. ;)

On his website he says there is only a 15% chance he will ever work full-time in talk radio again.

15%? Seems rather arbitrary. How about 20.79%? Or 45 RPM? Geez...

BTW, this thread should serve as a caution to all of us that sometimes, just sometimes, the objects of our affection/abjurment actually read what we post about them. I have a simple rule of thumb: try not to post anything in a public forum that you wouldn't say to someone's face.

Or 1500 furlongs per fortnight (remember Mad Magazine's spoof on units of measurement?) In any event I believe those posting on Zig's website are mostly tongue in cheek.

Your caution is well taken, as I still maintain some of the postings in this thread went beyond criticism into the mean spirited. I give Ms. Brandon a lot of credit for being so good natured and I appreciate her class and talent as a news anchor as well.

To quote Mrs. Slocombe from Are You Being Served I am unanimous in this :D

He doesn't belong in radio.
He belongs in an asylum.
Ask any of the many members of his former staff.
Ask anyone in the news room (besides Leah, she still has a monetary arrangement with him so there will be no bad-mouthing from that one)
Ask John Kobylt!
I would watch and listen to this creep interact with other KFI staffers and was amazed every day that he'd still have all his teeth.
The guy is a lunatic and I for one am grateful that he never splashed on the high octane cologne, came to work and went out Hindenburg-style.
