Leaving the South for the North

On my way up from NC to live with the Yankees soon. I was wondering if you can listen to WKOX in Manchester NH or if it is too far away? I did a search and it says it will be going to 50kW but don't know if it has happened as of yet and if that will be listenable up there.

Thanks!

WKOX-1200 got the CP for the power upgrade, but neighbors of the proposed transmitter site in Newton have prevented WKOX from building it's new transmitter site.

There is little optimism at WKOX that they will be able to build that new site and boost power.

Not sure about after their upgrade is (if ever will be) done however right now it is unreachable in Manchester.

It might come in with a really good car radio--I used to be able to
pick it up sometimes on I-89 heading south toward Concord--but I think
they're still waiting on a power increase/facility changes. NIMBY and BANANA
problems (Not in my back yard/Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near
Anything). Prob. better off hoping a Manchester or Concord station
could go Air America, or try WXKS (who knows about them) or even the
Portland AAR station>?
______________

Thanks racoon- just posted on NNE board- not sure whether I am greater Boston area or Northern New England. WXKS on radio-locator looks like a rimshot at best and WLVP looks even worse. Has there been talk about any flips in Southern New Hampshire of any merit?

Not that I know of. Not many AMs around in NH. There were some flips recently
on FM in southern NH (96.5 to classic rock "The Mill" and 106.3 to "Frank";
in Manchester and Nashua respectively)...not sure if any others are coming
______________

Lets go Yankees lets go! Lets go yankees lets go! Yankees rule!

Well, I hope you know that he wasn't talking about the baseball team.

Anyway, Yankees are better than Red Sox! Oh crap. I said that on the Boston Board. I'm doomed.
______________

Sorry- in the south all people north of the Mason dixon line and east of Ohio are called yankees. When people from England talk to people from the south and call them Yanks they get quite upset so I understand and will be more sensitive. What do you prefer to be called? Soxies? Soxians? :0)

PS. Is Boston called Beantown or something?

Signed- clueless in NC

I am taking a note not to mention this when I go up there later this month. Could create trouble. It's just a game. I thought the Red Sox won the World Series last year? Which team does more steroids?

Dear Clueless,
Having lived in Atlanta for 2 years, I can tell you that being called a "Yankee"
down South - it was meant as an insult, I took it to be a high compliment!
We locals do not call Boston "Beantown". That, like Quincy Market, is strictly for tourists. Boston locals ARE friendly - but we take some time to warm up to people.
The pseudo-manners to which you may be accustomed are not in effect here. New Englanders can be quite blunt - but you will always know where you stand with us!

Cheer for the local teams, and don't make fun of the local accent -- you'll do just fine here!

Go Sox!

Actually, there was. I believe that WSNH-900 in Nashua, NH was slated to be one of the early AAR affiliates. I guess that the owners just changed their mind...

I live in New England and I hate the Red Sox (Patriots, Bruins and Celtics too!). I always give Fenway the symbolic middle finger whenever driving past in on I-90 (Massachusetts Turnpike).

By the way, will any New England radio stations outside of Connecticut still be airing the 26-time World Champions for the 2006 season?

You're entitled to your own opinion, but I wouldn't go flounting it around Boston if I were you.

> I live in New England and I hate the Red Sox (Patriots,

But frankly, there really isn't much of a following outside of Connecticut. Pretty much everyone in New England other than Connecticut and parts of Vermont is for the Sox. Just an FYI to the above poster.

I noticed on your profile that you are from New Britain, CT. New Britain was interestingly the basis of an NECN story last October, as it is the exact midway point between Yankee Stadium and Fenway "Paak".

WSKO-FM 99.7 outside of Providence is on the list, but you can bet that it's not there in April. There's also WVMT-620 in Burlington, VT, WNNZ-640 in Springfield, and WBRK in the Berkshires that are expected to be covering the Yankees.

Do note, though, WNNZ's sister station WHYN-560 carries the Sox, and WVMT and WBRK are both quite close to the NY state line. So I wouldn't really say that the Yankees Radio Network has much of a foothold in Red Sox Nation.

Christ, don't get me started on this. Burlington has plenty of Yankee morons. My best friend in the biz is from the Jersey Shore, and is a HUGE Yankee fan. She always tells me that "Burlington is a New York Yankee town because you can see New York right across the lake. You can't see Boston." That's when I remind her about Dave Roberts.
______________

Ha...actually the word Yankee has often been associated with _New England_

YANKEE Magazine
A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court
Yankee Swap
Yankee Homecoming (Newburyport)

That baseball team from the Bronx stole it from us :)
______________

And people from, say the UK, refer to all Americans as Yanks

Yes, I think I remember that. They wound up doing ESPN instead. And
WLVP in Portland was due to switch to ESPN from AAR but listeners
got together and convinced them not to switch.
