Lee Abrams

When Lee Abrams left XM for Tribune a couple years ago, everyone predicted the media company would enlarge its portfolio of radio stations. But then Tribune filed for bankruptcy protection, and Abrams seemed to fall off the earth. We knew he was still at Tribune, but he didn't seem to be doing anything. Those who know Lee know that's kind of what he did at XM. He liked flying around in private planes, going to baseball games, expounding theories about broadcasting, or just spending money.

Turns out that's exactly what he's doing now at Tribune. He's doing this series of sponsored featurettes for WGN-TV called Sky Dives, where he jumps in a plane and drops in at some dive restaurant in some part of the country. The one I saw had him going to a strange barbecue place in Memphis. I've had a lot of barbecue in Memphis, but this place is not on the map. Thus a Sky Dive. I imagine Lee or someone is selling this as a sponsored feature kind of thing. In fact I see they got Priceline to pick up the tab for ten weeks. What it has to do with Chicago is beyond me. It's more about nationalizing it as the WGN America thing than a local TV station. You can keep up with it at www.wgnamerica.com Not exactly what I expected from someone whose title is Chief Innovation Officer. But there you go...Lee Abrams is alive. Video killed the radio star.

The way I see it, Lee is one lucky guy. I am sure Tribune is paying all the expenses on his private plane and picking up all the additional expenses at the Sky Dives while he collects a handsome salary. Watch it all turn into something HUGE in no time.

It doesn't have to be on a map for smokin lee abrams to sky dive in. He makes it very easy. First fire up a fat doobie then start flying and walla there he is sky diving into some hole in the wall stoned out of his mind :D

Abrams got the can tied to him in the same Fall 2010 shakeup that pushed Randy Michaels out the door at Tribune Co. Seems the rather informal, rowdy style of business they did within the Tribune organization under Michaels became a focus of controversy--and of a critical NY Times story.

They've always been controversial, but also creative. Michaels and Abrams will be back...
