Lee Alexander to exit WSPA-FM Greenville

WSPA-FM, Magic 98.9 posted this on his Facebook page at about 10:30am this morning:

"It is with mixed emotions that I inform you that this Friday, Nov. 2nd will be my last day hosting the midday duties on Magic 98.9. I would like to devote more time to some new projects in my future. Thank you so very much for your loyalty over the years during my radio career. I will truly miss you and trust you and your family will have a wonderful and memorable upcoming holiday season.....Lee...."

Lee Alexander has my Top Shelf of respect. I too, hate to see him leave, but I do understand..."Projects". The real sad part here is that his Mid-day show never reached its purrrrr-tential. A short, shallow, Consultant picked playlist left him each day trying to make Chicken Salad outta Chicken Manure. Sad, but yet,...very typical! This leaves Gregg McKinney as their sole Air Talent. Nothing ill-spirited against Stacie Bartrow, but she's just not there yet. At this time, a wise move for Lee.

Lee Alexander is a legend and a class act. He has been on in this market for 40 years, more than likely the longest running jock on these days (except for maybe Russ Cassell, not sure), and has probably been on just 98.9 since the early "Lite Rock" days. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about him and wish him all the luck in the world.

I guess Entercom will go find an intern somewhere for a replacement...

I don't have any inside information but since it's the time of year when layoffs happen, I just assumed he's been laid off and his announcement was a nicer way of saying he won't be around anymore. Why wouldn't I expect they'll simply have someone else voicetrack it?

Unfortunately, you're more than likely correct. I've had the opportunity to meet Lee at some station events a couple of times and he is an extremely nice guy.

I didn't really mention voicetracking because Entercom has never done it, to my knowledge, from outside of the market here.

lee is a well known voice in greenville radio. i hope he left on his own terms but i bet it was on entercoms terms. cc has fired many and now i guess the other radio owners are catching up. stations getting ratings with no announcers is part of that i would think.

On the Cheap side, Let's see if we can Sluff some College students in to working for free!

At least Lee did get to say goodbye on-air and announce it in advance. It's not uncommon these days for a veteran broadcaster to be shown the door and not be allowed or given an opportunity to say goodbye to their listeners.

If a veteran broadcaster is shown the door and not allowed to say goodbye to his listeners(if he wants to) then the person that made the choice to do so should be fired and walked out the door next no matter what their position is or what job they hold.

I don't know the circumstances, but I can tell you that Lee was the most professional of jocks I had the pleasure of working with at 98.9.

A simple message board post can't express my gratitude for Lee's guidance and wisdom. Best wishes!

You don't say? ;)

I'll sling an echo to John Ellis's praise of Lee Alexander. I e-mailed Lee just two days before his departure, and confirmed my Top Shelf of respect. To me, as I see it, Entercom seems to overwork everyone that is actually on the payroll. Yes, per Carolinaradio, they might just put the stretch on Greg & Stacie;...with all Christmas only days away! I do like McKinney, but the man would sound much better on the air if he would refrain from drinking diet beer, and listening to jazz. That's enough to rot anyone's soul. To me, Stacie is acceptable on the air, but needs quite a bit of coaching. I'd love to train her...she could be very good. Her speedy (too damn fast!)delivery, and happy-ass "Churpi-ness"...is enough to cause any man to start drinking diet beer, and even listening to (awww-ful!) jazz.

My best regards to Lee Alexander (and John Ellis). It's sad that years of experience and skills in this industry, not to mention company loyality, doesn't count for anything anymore.

(Yes, I know this has existed well before Telcom 96 was passed, but it makes it worse when you have only have a handful of groups in control of the majority of the licenses in this country.)

i agree robyn. sadly there are bean counters that have taken radio's potential away from their radar. great talent like lee either decided he could no longer meet the expectations or he was someone with longevity who through no fault of his own commanded a salary that entercom no longer wanted to pay for that position. big mistake on their part
