Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton

Now in Seattle, but being from San Diego & Los Angeles, I've been familiar with "Hacksaw" for years and years. He seemed like one of the main anchors at XTRA and I know he's seeing his role diminish.

So, now listening to the national feed on Fox Sports, I was surprised to hear Hacksaw as the Christmas week fill in for Craig Shemon and James Washington. This doesn't seem like the sort of gig that an established guy in the nation's second (or is it third) largest market would take (not that I'm an expert on these things). I'd think he'd be the one taking the week off and having someone fill in for him.

All that said, is he on the outs and looking for a new gig or thinking of going national? I like his sound, but of course have a bias since I was pretty much introduced to sports radio by the Hacksaw and Jim Rome (in his local San Diego days).

I don't think you'll see the Saw leave anytime soon. He has a son that goes to school in San Diego so he would more than likely stay at XTRA till he finished school in about 2 years or so. If AM 570 boots the saw, you might see him over at the Mighty 1090 in San Diego. Lee is a So Cal sports radio icon so he should have no problem finding work in So Cal. Besides, the guys who replaced him still stink. Money is cool but I think the "Hip Hop Sports" thing just isn't working in LA. At least not for me. Hopefully they'll give Lee his 4 hours back.

Hacksaw is just another local has-been like Joe Mc Donnell who have run their course and don't get ratings anymore, so they've outpriced themselves from the market. He'll languish and do the scrub shift at 570 because 1090 obviously
has no interest. It's a shame what's happened to the business, but Hacksaw is circa 1965 radio and that schtick doesn't work anymore.
He could get a gig elsewhere(like Milwaukee)..but he won't leave San Diego as long as they pay him to ride out his contract.
The buffons who run 570 are grasping at straws with that awful afternoon show, but it's not nearly as embarassing as that Mancow crap in the am, getting no ratings after tons of advertizing dollars to prop it up.
570 doesn't want to fire Hacksaw and pay him not to work, so they've made him look like a scrub, hoping he'll quit in disgust.

I find Hamilton a refreshing change from the garbage that usually spews from Fox Sports this time of night. No, it is Shemon and Washington's shtick that is tired and no longer working.

I also find that the best local sports guys are the tops in sports talk, and the majority of network guys are the hacks. Most network guys couldn't carry a top sports show in a major league market.

Who said Fox Sports was good?

Hacksaw is the guy with the hat and press tag reading the teletype machine with his robotic delivery and pre-recorded fake interviews. Figures most of the uninformed West Coast sports listeners think Rome and Hacksaw are good. Neither one would succeed anywhere but this sorry area.

As for network guys not being able to carry a "top sports show in a major league market", can you name anyone in particular? I love the experts on this board who spew nonsense. Opinion is just that, but get some facts before you folks start rambling about things you don't know anything about!

I think a good spot for Hacksaw would be on Papa Joe's new "network". I'm not sure if anyone outside of Vegas is running Chevalier, but I think they have a similar appeal if Hacksaw piggybacked on papa Joe.

Have you lost your mind? Local guys are better? Only Mike and the Mad Dog, Mike North or possibly Glen Ordway are big enough to turn down a national show. Ask Rome what it is like to host a tour stop in front on 15,000 fans or Dan Patrick what it is like to be on the air from the NBA Finals and have listeners come up to him for an autograph? Even J.T at the Daytona 500 or Bruno at the Rose Bowl proves that that being syndicated is the way to go. Most local guys are not know 15 miles outside of their local market.
With satellite radio on the rise and Podcasts becoming the wave of the future, local hosts will be fighting for their jobs!

Is this what I think it is? EAST COAST BIAS? Are you of the same east coast bias that says Vin Scully, Bob Miller and the late Chick Hearn
don't compare to Marv Alpert, etc.? even though these LA guys are all hall of famers? As for Rome, I am not a HUGE Rome fan but he did get his start doing nights in So Cal on the Mighty 690 and he's a So Cal native and obviously he is syndicated nationally now and he's had numerous TV shows so I suppose people all over the country love him. As for Hacksaw, he is a sports radio icon in So Cal. Every radio guy has his schtick. As for Lee, it just happens to be reading headlines (in his monotone voice) which are informative to sports fans just driving home from work and he covers all teams, not just local. One last thing...you call So Cal a "sorry area". You live here now right? So it can't be that sorry if you choose to be here. Perhaps your hatred of west coast things (sports in general) is because you actually miss sportscasters where you are from and ESPN fills that void, but hey, if you move from one market to another, small or major, of course you won't appreciate the new area's broadcasters because you are used to one style and I guess ESPN projects that for you. Well, you're in the number 2 market in the country now and sports obviously has never really been a huge radio thing here. They tried bringing in the east coast sports guys. Didn't work. They brought in ESPN and FOX sports radio. Didn't work. It will never be WFAN where they get semi-decent ratings. It may well be under 1.0 here always except during Laker season.

Let me give you one simple fact. The syndicated guys out of LA at least have a career to look forward to. Rome, Bruno, J.T. the Brick and Siciliano have fans across the country who get to listen in other markets. LA has a few sports talk stations that get sad ratings. How would you like to go around LA knowing that your show doesn't even get a .05 rating on a station that isn't even ranked in the top 30 in the market? LA is the worst example of sports talk and Rome must sit back and laugh at all of the local guys who have to do remotes from Hooters and the ESPN Zone while he makes $ millions.

The credibility of realdeal is in serious doubt after ANY comparison that links Rome and Bruno with Bitterman (Siciliano). Care to identify yourself, realdeal? Didn't think so...
