i see that you are from Sudbury ONt..i have a really quick
question...wasn't there a 'new' station signing oN ?
if so, what came of it --also, in sudbury, isn't there
a funny tourist station, that always broadcasts..such
outdated events..and, it's a mystery who is the actual owner..

final question/thought: is sudbury, very north in ontario..
*Actually, have frequencies left to apply for ? / it is just
no one wants them..because of the smaller sized cities/markets..

tourist station with out dated info.

CKBB is the tourist station and is owned by the folks at CJTK.

Re: tourist station with out dated info.

Yeah, and the number to call the station has been out of
service for like close to two years now. I had called
CJTK just before Christmas time regarding their station
and the DJ had no idea about the Tourism station! and
that's the only number to contact CJTK during the day.
http://www.cjtk.com

I knew the Tourism station is owned by the folks at
CJTK, but I had no clue myself if the Tourism stn, was
really owned by CJTK or not since some of them DJ's had
NO clue about their sister station!

The Sudbury Tourism doesn't seem to know how to stay on
the air, they were back on the air in June for awhile and
now they are off the air once again and as I type this
note.

There's NOT Only the Tourism station that keeps going off
the air time after time, this other radio station in Sudbury
a low-powered Christian station 101.1 CKSO-FM has been off
the air for like a month and they've been doing that alot
since they signed on back in December 2002.
http://www.cksofm.netfirms.com/

I finally gave up on contacting these two stations back
in December '04.

CKSO and CKBB are the only two low-powered radio stations
here in Sudbury and I have no clue if low-powered FM's really
fit the Sudbury market or not.

Take care,

Lee.

The future of Sudbury radio?

The folks at CJTK owned by Eternacom Inc. That CKBB Tourism
at 102.9 FM is off the air right now.

Quite possibly due to smaller market cities, but there are
quite a few FM Frequencies that are vacant for Sudbury:

FM/MHz
88.5
91.7 or 91.9
102.1
107.1, 107.5, or 107.9

Here are the current used Sudbury Frequencies 2005:

FM/MHz
90.1 CBC Radio 2
90.9 CBC Radio French Stereo
92.7 CJRQ Rock
94.1 CKNR AC(Elliot Lake/Manitoulin)
94.9 CBON CBC French(Espanola)
95.5 CJTK Christian
96.7 CKLU Laurentian University
97.5 CBCE CBC Radio 1(Little Current)
98.1 CBON CBC French
98.9 CHYC AC French
99.9 CBCS CBC Radio 1
101.1 CKSO Christian
102.9 CKBB Sudbury Tourism Info. Radio
103.9 CHNO CHR/Top 40
105.3 CJMX EZ Rock

Now to the AM Radio side, here are some AM
vacant Frequencies that may be used in the
Sudbury area:

AM/KHz
550 once used by CHNO until 2000.
900 once used by CHYC until 2000.

Other vacant AM Frequencies that can be used
for the Sudbury area:
530-ideal for Airport, traffic and weather info.
730 once used by CJNR Blind River until 1997.
840 once used by CHUR North Bay until 1996.
930 once used by CKNS Espanola until 1997.
990 once used by CBON CBC French Espanola 1990's.
1110
1240 once used by CBC Radio 1 Espanola 1990's
1340 once used by CKNR Elliot Lake until 1997.
1400 once used by CBC Radio Spanish (near Espanola)
1440 once used by CHNO back in the 1940's.
---

The only AM Radio station left in Sudbury is AM 790
CIGM a country station owned by Rogers radio.

That's all I know about the above now vacant AM/FM
Freqs. that can be used for Sudbury at this point
in time.

What format do you think should be introduced to
Sudbury?

FM:
-Smooth Jazz/easy listening
-Alternative
-Hip-hop and R&B?
-70's, 80's & 90's hits like classic Top 40, disco,
retro, dance, Hot AC?
-Multicultural, ethnic?
-A country on FM station, that was last heard
in Sudbury on 92.7 FM in 1990 before they moved
from 92.7 FM to 790 AM deleting CKSO AM and 92.7
becoming Rock.

AM:
-Talk? that was tried on CHNO in mid-90's but
failed.
-Sports
-Oldies? once used by CHNO until 2000.
-Multicultural?

And for the TV side, we only have 7 off-air stations
and there hasn't been a new station since the late
1990's which was CHCH-TV Hamilton, Ontario.

Sudbury has a current population of over 155,000+
we also have College and University students from
out of town and some around the world. I think some
of these above formats MAY fit the Sudbury and
surrounding markets.

So what do you think the Future of Sudbury radio
and Northern Ontario will be like? who knows!

Take care.

Re: tourist station with out dated info.

that's sad..

i would luv to have a station..in a small market town -
u could..in a sense "own" the town !!

set up shop.. !! and create such a 'buzz' by being the
only 'player' in town !! and have your on-air Talents..
be "major celeb's" ! if it were me...i would make
the most of it !!

-i believe the thing u would need..is to have the station..either chr/rock/country, no soft stuff..and, u have no excuse
NOT being a number 1 station, book after book !!

Sudbury radio FM DX'ing

> what is DXing on FM like in sudbury?

Well, one of the farthest FM Radio stations
i've ever received via Tropo they call it
was out of Harrisonville, Missouri a classic
rocker on 101.1 KCFX nearly 10 years ago...that
was a jaw dropper for me!

I have a question, has anyone here ever experienced
receiving Florida via Tropo in Ontario? I would
be very surprised if that happened to me!

I've heard FM signals out of most of Ontario,
from Barrie to Sault. Ste. Marie, Owen Sound,
Parry Sound, Kirkland Lake, and North Bay being
almost regular everytime.

I also heard Northern/Central Michigan.

Sometimes on really good conditions I've receive
one of the Toronto stn's including Hamilton, London,
Windsor, and even Ottawa and Kingston. Out of the
states on great conditions, I've heard most of
Michigan, Northern Ohio, Pennsylvania, Western
New York like Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and
even Vermont to the east! speaking of Vermont,
one early September morning, I had Vermont Public
Radio on 107.9 FM out of Burlington, VT.

Just a couple weeks back I had WWHT "Hot 107-9" out
of Syracuse, NY strong enough to be in Stereo.

Tonight on my way home from visiting, I had CJXY
"Y108" out of Hamilton, ON and very spotty signal.

I live just about an hour Northwest of Sudbury, Ontario
and I have a great DX spot to tune into FM signals up
on a hill not too very far from where I live!

For e-skip which usually occurs during the Summer
months but wasn't really a great season for it this year,
I've received FM signals out of the Southern states,
mid-west, east of the rockies, to the east coast.

One more thing, I know this DX thing that i'm typing here
is off-topic for this Canadian board but IF you want to
find out about DX, you can go to the DX board on radio-info.com
and there are a few great DX sites you can check out:

http://www.wholez.com/articles/TV/FM_DX
http://www.anarc.org/wtfda/tv_web_links.htm
http://www.dxfm.com/fmdx_main.htm

That's all for now and take care!

Lee.

Easy 101 out of Tillsonberg Ontario is a small market station that plays easy listening music, and they're quite happy with the station...the thing I find VERY funny are the Call letters. "CKOT"
If I were listening to that station while visiting, I'd probably fall asleep on a "KOT" (that's cot, for those who are picky.)<P ID="signature">______________
