Legal And Illegal Power Aliens

It's a new month (April) and that means daytime power/pattern
for AM radio is 6:00am to 7:00pm.

Was not listening at either time today, however here is
a glance at the usual suspects as of 7:45pm:

KFNN 1510 Mesa--on night power/pattern.

KFNX 1100 Cave Creek--uh oh! Illegal power alien alert.
Still running 50 gallons, for some vitamin infomercial.

KAZG 1440 Scottsdale--Lumberyard 1440 is still on the air
with their gargantuan 52 watts of music pow-pow-powerrrr!
Which begs the usual questions: do they know they're still on?
How and when did the lamptimer switch to night power?
Will they be staying on every night or is this just another
Gumpdusky fluke? (Just heard a jingle between songs!)
And the Big Q: will they do a legal ID at/near the TOH?

"More news in thirty minutes, bulletins at once.
Charles McCord, WNNNNNBC News."

My fault, I was at the lumberyard this morning waiting for my mechanic.

What is a potentiometer?

The Nurse and I completely forgot to monitor the usual suspects. Something 'bout paying 51 cents to ride the Squaw Peak on Tuesday got us distracted.

News five minutes sooner on WABC which beats KKNT's idiotic 30/30 news!

What a waste of board space. Noone listens to these stations and noone cares.

Who is "noone" and how long has he/she been listening to these stations?

He is Henry the 8th he is....

He also got married to a widow whom by the way had married at least seven times before.

And everyone was a Henry... she wouldn't have a Willy or a Sam.

I'm sorry OldiesFan, see what happened to your topic when you were away? ;D

To the person who said no one cares: Please don't feel like you're obligated to post in such a topic that you don't care about... The topic would've been dead long ago if no one cared about it. I personally don't condone stations going beyond their authorization of sunrise to sunset. I think the topic itself is interesting. But of course, to each their own! ;)

Wonder how long it'll take for these stations to change.... if at all. Keep us posted OldiesFan; "on the hour, on the half, and when it breaks!" (KFI) ;)

"Lumberyard 1440" is a witty name someone on this board (Akbar?) came up with to refer to AM 1440's tower (city of license Scottsdale). It's located near (in?) the lumberyard on Thomas in west Scottsdale.

Yup...that's one of our wise-ass names the Nurse and I came up with years ago. Just pull into the parking lot of Ponderosa Lumber at 6425 E Thomas and tell 'em you'll be right in after you check out that self supported tower along the canal bank. You'll swear the xmttr site is the Scottsdale version of Sanford & Son with all the crapola stored around it! Good ol Lumberyard 14~Forty..no ground system we can identify; no use of nightime authorization; only one colonblow show a day; no legal sign on or off; no reliable lamptimer; 1/2 of the Gumpdusky AM fleet in the Valley; etc. On the plus side, it's always good for a topic on this board!

Note, its the road that runs NW to SE on the W side of the lumberyard.

My mechanic is there, he will fix you up.

Its a great little surreal street on the extreme edge of the Scottsdale that Scottsdale forgot.

Wednesday April 2. Too weird!

I flip on Lumberyard 1440 at 7:05pm and they're pushing up
aural daisies into the ether (that's "off the air" to those not
so frequentially inclined), so I go check out 1510 and 1100
(more on these perps later).

At 7:09, I again dial up the Lumberyard and, lo and behold,
KAZG is back on with their blazing 52 watts!

Gumpdusky must be toying with us, or else Akbar needs to
pick them up a new lamp timer when he goes to Walgreens. ;)

Meanwhile, back at our other fave power-busters...

Kay-Funn 1510 is barely audible, as in buried below the other
noise here in the 'Tuke, so they've dropped to night power.
Hmmm, being "clean" so far in April doesn't make up for the
alleged transgressions in March. ::)

Kay-Fenex 1100, as of 7:38, is still pumping out 50 gallons for
some prostate health pill infomercial.

Yes indeedy, this is too weird...even for the Esteemed Middle Eastern Men of the Media! After razzing Gumpdusky for the past two years, we're afraid we've awaken the sleeping 52 watt Lumberyard 14~Forty giant. Nurse Jeff and I were rockin' out Wednesday night with several hundred in a row from the Scottsdale Goldmine as they don't bother with jingles, liners, commercials or legal IDs when running at night. We can only guess Gumpdusky has a buyer and they want to hear what 52 watts of music pow-pow-power sounds like at night. We're in Buckeye Media Hut Heaven hearing those golden oldies pumpin' out from Lumberyard 14~Forty...it's got our minds off paying $1.01 to use the Loop 101!

Lumberyard 14~Forty Report
Thursday 4/3/08

7pm...still rockin' with 14 in a row and 5kw of Music Pow, Pow, Power

7:03p...infamous Gumpdusky "yank the carrier" sign off with no legal ID

7:20ish..the oldies return with 52 watts of paint peeling wattage and station production!

Perhaps the Gumpdusky engineers are afraid of arcing at the Lumberyard xmttr site when they switch from 5kw to .052kw? It's either that or they're just giving the competition a little time to catch up ;D

Dr. Akbar
with helpful assistance provided by Nurse Jeff

Dang it! I missed the 7:00 threshold again tonight (Thursday)
by a crucial few minutes, but thanks to the Doc for getting the
sign-off scoop. :)

BTW, I had 7:06:35 as the time when KAZG magically (or faulty
lamp timer-y) reappeared.

A check of the others shortly thereafter had KFNN 1510 legal
(amazing, ain't it?) and KFNX 1100 illegal for the third night in
a row--although they had dropped power by a subsequent
listen at 7:25.

1440 seemed to go off at seven o'clock on those nose, on my clock. Right in the middle of Martha & the Vandellas' "Nowhere to Run". I even checked four minutes later to see if they snuck back on, in that short amount of time as they did last night. So, tonight it took twenty minutes to get back on?

Just enough time to successfully (but barely) escape the ears of OldiesFan... but not enough to get away from Dr. Akbar, with the assistance of Nurse Jeff. They really do have "nowhere to run"!

:D

That's us, KOOL Cumer! Not much to do as the sun goes down in Buckeye, so Nurse Jeff and I switch over to the AM Band and see who's legal and who should be deported! Think of me as the Sheriff Joe of AM Radio and Nurse Jeff as Deputy Barney Fife.

Tip of the fez to KFuNN on Thursday's night power down...hit it right after the 7pm legal ID. We gotta get the model number of that lamp timer and recommend it to Gumpdusky!

More of the same from the lumberyard tonight (Friday),
along with a legal ID on the way out the 5 kw door--
airing just after 7:00, followed by Sam & Dave for about
:20, then poof! Off the air. Then, following the new
Gumpdusky tradition, the 52-watt version of KAZG came
back on cold (song JIP) at about 7:06:30.

Both Kay-Funn 1510 and Kay-Fenex 1100 played by the
power rules tonight as both had dropped to night power
by 7:00, with 1510 again yanking the wattage during
their legal ID.

Lumberyard 14~Forty Power Change Report
Friday 4/4/08
by Dr Akbar 'n Nurse Jeff

YIKES!

An actual legal ID shortly after 7pm followed by Sam & Dave then the infamous Gumpdusky carrier dump. Five minutes later the Arizona Gold Mine is pumpin' out the oldies with a blazing 52 watts of Lumberyard Pow-Pow-Power. Still not sure why it takes five minutes of being off the air to change the power?

So the Nurse and I passed the hookah around our Buckeye Media Hut living room and wondered if we should take early retirement. Seems our work is just about done: Gumpdusky is finally using their nightime power authorization; KT'R's Master Blogger has quit his writing career; KFuNN no longer waits an hour and a half after sunset to change their pattern; and the market value of our '76 Gremlin now buys a seat on the Clear Channel Board!

Can anyone think of another reason we should hang around this board a little longer? Too bad our ol buddy Zumahans disappeared...we could've turned everything over to him!
