LEGENDARY BAY AREA DJ'S...WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

He was here....on Big 98.1 playing 70s & 80s music. They killed it to put on KISS. Big 98.1 never got the expected ratings, I suppose.

hits....From looking online, I also found out that the legendary Don Steele worked there in 1964 before going south to KHJ...

Don Steele met Robert W Morgan while both were at KEWB. KEWB also had other legendaries such as Michael Jackson, Gary Owens, and Casey Kasem (where he developed his music trivia style after management told him to knock off doing cartoon voices).

I'd like to fast forward to early 80's for a moment since KFRC in my listening prime was still a well liked station by the listening youth...I've heard that Bill Lee has quit after many years at WKTU in New York...My question is what is he doing now? Also, I would love to hear him once again on KFRC 106.9.... I know about the unfortunate departure of his stint at KFRC regarding the gay community's dissapointment at whatever stunt he pulled, but I would think that 25 years later would'nt cause such an uproar if he returned to KFRC......Perhaps him being back with his energy, KFRC could start playing some of the hits that kept them great in the early 80's....

I don't think anybody would hold that 25 year old glitch against Broadway Bill Lee. These days, there are plenty of right-wing talk hosts that say serious homophobic, sexist, or even marginally racist things on a daily basis. Besides, nobody held it against him when he later worked at KMEL for a couple of years.

But Lee is currently the afternoon drive jock on KFRC sister station WCBS-FM. When you think about a hot radio job on a Classic Hits station, I don't think you can do much better than that.

Thanks for the link Lkeller!!!...Yeah, its a pipe dream that Bill Lee would give up a gig on the highest rated oldies station in the largest market to work on a station in a smaller market that has been having rating issues to boot

I heard that Gary Gelow of KPEN was electrocuted accidentally by James Gabbert, is that true?

Mred -you appear to be attracted to the morbid and the bizarre by nature. I may be wrong, but I believe Gary Gielow (note correct spelling) is still alive. Since "electrocution" is defined as death by electric shock, I doubt what you are asking about is true.

Is it possible that Gabbert accidentally shocked Gielow in the hundreds of times they were fooling around with electronic equipment together in the early days of KPEN? Sounds plausible. Big deal.

Last I heard he's alive and well and living in Calistoga with occasional forays into San Francisco.

Wasn't he at one of the radio historical society luncheons not long ago?

If you're talking about Broadcast Legends, it was Gabbert at the September 2007 Legends luncheon. Gielow was not present.

He must have made one of the events somewhere because I've seen a photo.

How do we know it is the real Gary Gellow? He could be a double put there by Gabbert. During an open house Gabbert open the closet door at the station and showed me the ticker-tape news machine.

I worked for Jim for 3 years as a DJ at K101 from 1970-1973 and never once talked with Gielow. Jim's 'partner' then was Michael Lincoln, who probably did his fair share of shocking Jim at the transmitter :)
BTW - I would definitely class Gabbert among the 'legends' of radio. He was a genious, in front of his time in most all his pursuits.
I learned more about aesthetic music program from him (and Bill K. & Bill D.) than most any other sources in my career.

The term "partner" doesn't need to be in quotes, by the way. Yes, by the mid-60s, Jim was involved with Michael Lincoln. I remember when Jim gave him the overnight shift; prior to that KPEN had signed off at midnight. Gary was still a partner in the company as far as I remember, but by then had turned his attention to trains and such.

Does anybody know where Steve Garland is today? HE should be on KFRC, along with some of the other classic jocks that could relate and be entertaining. I remember him on KSFO and KYA, BIG 98 and I think on KFRC. He was like the Beatles expert for a long time in SF. He used to be a rock jock too, but I cant remember if it was KRQR or KFOG. Last time I heard him was in the 90s. Is he still on the air somewhere?

All it took was 10 seconds of Googling, and here is your answer:

It looks like Steve is busier than ever.

Garland has been off the air and in sales for a while now. He has great people skills, and was always selling himself to anyone within range when he was on-air, so probably is doing great in sales and making some real money.

I thought SF deejays could make big bucks, its a shame to lose these guys to the sales dept. I did find some airchecks on the site listed, thanks. Is that where a lot of the classic DJs went? Who else? All these guys shuld be rounded up for weekend shows or something.

Back in 1980 till 81 KCBS FM 97.3 had the best line up which included Steve Garland,, The legendary John "MACK" Flanagan.. Diedre Gentry, and Mr Music Joel parker Antrim,, Steve worked as I recall 8 hours 6pm til 2 am,, vast music knowledge,, A shame they had to flip to KRQR!! Thats when 1260 got Gene nelson, and Russ the moose back on KYA 1981 turned out to be a good year, and of course KIOI 101.3 had Chris Edwards doing his "TIME MACHINE" sunday nites,, bay area radio really only has one show worth listening to Sundays @ 9 am With JMF on KFRC! KFRC ought to see if JMF wants a few more hours,, hes got quite a few fans! LKELLER,, they took away my XM RADIO user name, so I took Hunkey Snarkey this is a term I never heard till I heard JMF use this term ,,, works for me. Kenny in Concord

"...they took away my XM RADIO user name..."

You can't be sirius!

Sorry, I apologize.

Probably something about using a trade-marked user name. Welcome back, Kenny. I agree with you about CBS-FM. It was a good early Oldies station with great jocks. But then, as now - ratings rule, and the station was not popular. I advertised my retail business on the station, and JMF voiced the commercial. It was a thrill for me, and it sounded great. But I might as well have thrown my advertising dollars down a rat-hole.

KRQR was actually a good move for CBS - it was a popular station for quite a few years.
