Legendary former Eagles coach Buddy Ryan dies

Buddy Ryan, the Eagles' head coach from 1986 to 1990, died Tuesday at 82.

We longtimers, here in Houston, tend to have the vision of ol' Buddy as the Oilers Defensive Coordinator, and his fist's sudden sideline introduction to former Oilers OC Kevin Gilbride's mouth emblazoned into our collective memories. Ryan ran a solid defense and brought a swagger about him that told you he asked no quarter and gave none. He will be missed, but the mark he made on the league will carry on for many years to come.

R.I.P., Buddy Ryan. My condolences to his loved ones.

I knew he was in bad shape when I saw a story on ESPN (might have been on SportsCenter or a 30 For 30 documentary) about the 85 Bears that showed Mike Singletary pushing Buddy around in a wheelchair.)

I was wondering when someone would get around to mentioning the Bears. His greatest fame came as the architect of that team's defense. It set up his entire head coaching career, which, as KeithE4 says, paled in significance and accomplishment.
