Legendary KLOS/Los Angeles personality Bob Coburn has passed on

CUMULUS MEDIA Classic Rocker KLOS/LOS ANGELES legendary personality BOB COBURN, host of the 9:30a-noon slot and the host of the nationally syndicated ROCKLINE show for decades, passed away TODAY (12/17) at 12:32p surrounded by family after a long battle with lung cancer. COBURN was 68 years old.

KLOS PD and CUMULUS Corp. PD/Rock Formats KEITH CUNNINGHAM told ALL ACCESS, "The outpouring of support has been jaw dropping. The radio and music industries lost a legend today.

"BOB told me about this in late MAY or early JUNE and had been fighting this like a champion. Working with a guy like BOB was a bucket list opportunity. Not a day went by that I didn't learn something about music or an artist that I'd never have known were it not for him. BOB had so much knowledge and humility. He was a true pleasure to work with."

The AllAccess.com article quoted above has since been updated with additional paragraphs/information - see below:

CUMULUS MEDIA & WESTWOOD ONE SVP/Content & Programming MIKE McVAY told ALL ACCESS, "Legend is only one of the words that can be used to describe BOB. He was a good human. I only became close to him after his diagnosis, but I was struck at how quickly we bonded ... much like he has bonded with millions over his career."

ALL ACCESS Rock Editor KEN ANTHONY added, "I had the pleasure of knowing and working with BOB COBURN since I moved to LOS ANGELES to program KLOS in 1991. He was the consummate professional and an unparalleled interviewer. He was an influence to many in Rock Radio and will be sorely missed."

KEN spoke to BOB and interviewed him for ALL ACCESS ROCK 10 QUESTIONS (6/09/15) and it's a terrific read all about BOB and his career.

KLOS is currently airing nothing by (sic) listener requests for BOB, and some of (sic) biggest artists in Rock are sending in messages and thoughts.
BOB (sic) survived by his wife LYNETTE and three children. A private ceremony has been planned, and a public celebration of Bob's life will be held sometime in JANUARY

So unfortunate. Hard to fathom some of the rock legends that have left us this year such as Glenn Frey, David Bowie, Prince and Leon Russell and now time is taking some the DJ heroes that made sure we got 'em. Bob has been playing the rock and roll for decades and I always like the fact that his show was never about him; he made the music the star. On Rockline, the artists were the stars.

He is best known for hosting Rockline for years, but I will always remember him best for hosting "Noontime Nuggets" for awhile in the late 80's on KLOS where he would open up the playlist and play cool rock 'n' roll oldies, r&b and blues that would otherwise not be played. You can hear a lot of the same stuff now on Tom Petty's "Buried Treasure" show now SiriusXM. In any case, it made KLOS a much cooler station at the time and because it was such a great idea, it didn't last long on the corporate radio station, but even 30 years on, I remember it clearly and fondly. I think later on he had a similar "Nighttime Nuggets", but I have not heard it as I have largely been satellite only for the last few years.
