Legendary playwright Neil Simon dies at 91

BroadwayWorld is sad to report that legendary playwright Neil Simon has died at 91. He passed away last night at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. The cause was complications from pneumonia.

Neil Simon is widely regarded as one of the most successful, prolific, and performed playwrights in the world. He has received more combined Oscar and Tony nominations than any other writer. Overall, he has garnered 17 Tony nominations and won three. In 1983 became the only living playwright to have a New York theatre, the Neil Simon Theatre, named in his honor.

I really enjoyed the original "Odd Couple" seriesonce I discovered it, but I did not see all the episodes because I didn't start watching it from the beginning. I saw the version with Demond Wilson and Ron Glass and I really liked the version with Matthew Perry and Thomas Lennon. I finally saw the movie a few years ago. I've seen several of the movies based on his work too.

And yes, Neil Simon was involved briefly in broadcasting. He was an investor in Johnny Carson's failed UHF independent in Albuquerque in the '80s.

Another legend passes on. His legacy will live on forever. Writing 'The Odd Couple' not only made big bucks in theater, but led to Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon starring in the movie (which became the 4th-highest grossing film of 1968), and Jack Klugman in the TV show. RIP Neil!
