Legendary retailer, well-known radio advertiser Modell’s files for bankruptcy

CEO Mitch Modell cited "lousy" local sports teams as a reason for his company's decline.

Probably has a point, since, in addition to selling sports equipment, the chain also did a big business in team-related clothing and accessories. Not much excitement about the Knicks, Jets and Rangers in years, and the Giants have struggled as well. But online shopping probably hurt just as much, especially in sporting goods.

The demise of Modell's should be viewed from a higher level. To wit, the company's tactical and operational problems resulted from failed strategic planning.

There's a very obvious difference from a Modell's and a Bass Pro Shop or Cabella's. The first time I went to one of those stores, it changed the way I viewed sporting goods stores completely.

Yeah...Modell’s was one of those “old school” retailers that just wasn’t able to compete against the bigger rivals with more scale like Dick’s, WalMart, Amazon, and even Kohl’s. If you were looking for generic sporting goods like workout gear, bats, balls, etc., the other guys almost always beat Modell’s on price. The point about the local teams is also somewhat valid. In Super Bowl or World Series years, there would be lines of people waiting to buy stuff. It’s been a long time...

Anyway...sad to see them go. I feel badly for the employees.
