Len Goldberg

The following is from John Gorman:

Our great friend Len "Boom" Goldberg passed away. Funeral arrangements are forthcoming.

Boom was the one and onlyvoice of the Buzzardand had one of - if not the - best known voice on Cleveland radio from the 70s through the 90s.

He was the voice heard throughout every hour on WMMS on IDs, sweeps, and spots throughout three decades of Cleveland radio. He was also the longest running continuous air personality on WMMS.

Please pass this on.

JG

Oh wow. So sorry to hear of the Boom's passing. My thoughts go out to his friends and family. Cleveland has lost a true radio legend.

AllAccess.com reports

If you ever heard Rocker WMMS/CLEVELAND from the 1970s through the 90s, you heard the unmistakable pipes of LEN "BOOM" GOLDBERG. That voice is silenced as he has passed away from undisclosed causes. He was in his 70s.

GOLDBERG's voice graced the Top of the hour IDs, sweepers, and spots on WMMS for three decades, and was the station's longest running personality.

And, it was his voice that was heard on the original "From the Top of the Empire State Building...." legal ID's on Z-100/NEW YORK, when SCOTT SHANNON signed it on. No word yet on services.

My sources at WMMS tell me audio is being gathered as I write for an on air tribute to this radio legend. If you have airchecks, etc of Boom, please contact WMMS.

I went to college in Ashland, Ohio in the late 80's for radio/tv...we all spent many a drunken nights at the station doing Lenny imitations...He was the guy everybody turned UP on their stereos when the top of the hour hit...hell, we'd prepare for it before the last song of the hour...power and energy, with no effort at all...thats a talent...hope there will be lots of links to amazing audio...and, yes...he's missed already...

WMMS has now got a tribute page up, with audio, pics, etc. More being added. When you log on there's a great legal ID that plays.

Hopefullly they @ WMMS can find the bit that Mitch Todd produced with Boom that later appeared on a FMQB cd. It has Mitch coaching Boom on the pronunciation of "Cleveland". Funny as hell! Boom tells Mitch, on the audio, that he's been saying "Cleeeeve-land" longer than Mitch has been alive. Sounding like a whipped little boy Mitch's reply "Ok Boom, whatever you say." FUNNNYYYY!

It's Mitch CRAIG...He's from Memphis.Been doing V'overs for many years all over the country.

Lots of good stuff on that WMMS tribute site. Nice tribute from Jesse. Awesome to hear some of that stuff, amazing how much the sound of radio has changed. Good to hear the BLF Bash on the one clip.

NO It's NOT Mitch Craig. I worked at WMMS with MITCH TODD, the Creative Director of WMMS from 1994-97, and late 98-00.

Mitch Craig has never worked at WMMS, nor has he ever been a voice on WMMS.

Mitch Craig was incorrectly identified on OMW. It's MITCH TODD.

Personally... I would run a BOOM legal ID even today. It's a signature sound for WMMS. I'm sure there's dry tracks on a DAT or CD somewhere. Could be produced to be more "2007", but at least it would still be BOOM.

Just once per hour... Boom alone, or with the other VO's, John Wells and Malcolm Ryker. Those two are heard the rest of the hour. Boom at the Top would stand out. A "tip of the Buzzard's wing" and all.

I collect jingles & old liners & I emailed Boom a couple years ago asking him if he had any old 'MMS stuff & if he had any of the old G-98 jingles Beau Coup did & he replied that they were all destroyed in a flood. One of my favorites..."You're listening to the radio station voted America's best...THE FLAME THROWIN' BUZZARD~~~WMMS...CLEVEland!"! Wish someone hadn't ripped off my Buzzard Morning Zoo Home Cooked Favorites album up at Ohio School of Broadcasting! Thoughts & prayers to all & a bow of the buzzard head,(the ORIGINAL HINKLEY BUZZARD NOT THE ONES CHEAPCHANNEL CLONED & SET UP AROUND THE REST OF THE COUNTRY GENERICALLY). Radio will never be the same. I can picture God himself saying..."Say it again for me Boom!!! Say it again, just once more!!!" Rest in peace.

Hardly without precedent. KYW/Philadelphia still uses Dick Covington's voice on their TOH ID, even after his passing two years ago (and must've known about Infinity's name change to CBS Radio eons before anyone else!). He joined the station shortly after Group W moved back there from Cleveland in 1965. Sean Caldwell handles all other station imaging, IIRC, but Dick's voice still is at the TOH.

Just caught this thread...

We did correct the Mitch Identification. It was indeed Mitch Todd, and we heard that originally, but somewhere between brain and keyboard it became Mitch Craig.

Just saw the billboard on I-90 going into Cleveland......nice tribute to Boom. Don't know if there are any other billboards set up in the area.
