Len Hathaway Passes

"SOUTH CAROLINA radio personality LEN HATHAWAY, who died WEDNESDAY after a long battle with ALS at 79.

HATHAWAY was the voice of the 'SKINS on WMAL-A/WASHINGTON in the 70's before joining WIS-A/COLUMBIA, SC as Sports Director in 1978, later moving to WFBC-F/GREENVILLE, SC as News Director. More recently, he worked for the SOUTH CAROLINA Dept. of Justice as a media liaison".

While growing up in the Elmira area, I remember a Len Hathaway being on WNBF-TV 12 in the early 60s (back in the dark ages, huh?).

Is this the same Len Hathaway?

According to the obituary in the South Carolina State newspaper, "Mr. Hathaway died Thursday, December 7, 2006. He was born May 8, 1927, in Binghamton, New York."

Mr. Hathaway served in the U.S. Army and later began his 50-year broadcasting career. He started as an Atlantic weatherman, a kids’ show host and as the host of a teen bandstand type show. I remeber him doing the weather on CH 12 as the Atlantic Weatherman. I'm not sure about the kid's and teen shows.

Len Hathaway hosted a kids' show on WNBF-TV Channel 12. His character was "Admiral Appleby." I believe the infamous Iggy (Roy Swinamer's puppet) also appeared on the show.

in the Hampton Roads area in the mid and late '60s? If
so, I remember him doing sports there.

Hi guys! This is the same Len Hathaway, my dad. He did have the Admiral Appleby show, the dance show, did sports on channel 10 in Hampton Roads for years, was the voice of the Redskins on WMAL in D. C. for the latter half of the 70s, worked for PBS as media director for a few more years, acted in several shows such as American Gothic (Requiem) before settling in during his last working years as Media liason for the Juvenile correctional facilities of South Carolina. He was very active in his church (Saxe Gotha Presbyterian), devoted to his loving wife Nancy--pop's 3rd, until the end. The bout with ALS wasn't too long actually--about a year and a half and we were lucky enough to spend a lot of time with him during that time. He is fondly remembered, loved forever and sorely missed!

I have not been on here for a while, so I did not notice this thread coming back... Just so you know, you can call me "Igy Jr." (Roy Swinamer's son) Not that I can ever fill the man's shoes... As you may have known, my father passed in early 2005.

There was some great old 16mm film stuff of the admiral and Igy from back in the day that I have transferred to video over the years, including a great piece I'll call the 'hangover' that was "not for air". I need to pull it off the old 3/4" U-matic tapes before they age too much more or my working deck dies. (the 16mm seems to have been misplaced or I would re-transfer it)

Some of the footage appeared briefly in a WSKG "Memory Store" program from a few years back that also included interviews with my father AND mother (she filled in many times and was on the air with Igy as "Miss Wanda")

If you keep bothering me, (a lot) I will keep a fire under my own butt to get the stuff preserved to format from this decade and get you a copy! You can reach me at [email protected]
