I think he should have survived. It would have been tough, but this was a mistake he should have been allowed to ride out.

Well it's garnering national attention through www.Drudgereport.com and on the Opie and Anthony show on XM. It's an absolute abomination that he was fired. He wasn't even speaking his mind. It just goes to show how the cowards this industry have taken over.

In fact, if you listen to the audio he was in the process of complimenting Ms. Rice, and the word "coon" didn't even make sense in context, but "coup" would have.

THE AUDIO: http://media.stltoday.com/stltoday/audio/ktrs1.wma

Listen and decide for yourself.

After he slipped up and said "Coon" he should have immediately said Coup and just went on. That's the professional thing to do, and I'm sure no one would have said anything at all. He apologized himself out of a job.

AND what of the board op? Why wasn't the delay button hit, and everyone saved?

From a personal point of view, KTRS is a joke of a station, and has gotten worse since the new ownership with includes the Cardinal's got involved.

A Seattle morning radio host had him on the air this morning. All I can say is that everybody slips up. Yes, I heard the audio. From what I understand, the morning team on that station didn't waste any time in bashing him on-air. Sounds like a really fun station(sarcasm).

Things have also apparently just gotten worse for Lenihan as he was suspended from his other job at a local college. Although I can understand the station felt like they had to make a tough response, I, too, have to agree that he should have survived. I've certainly slipped my tongue a few times on-air, and, realistically, I probably do every other week at a minimum. Of course, most of them aren't particularly memorable as they're just stumbling on an occasional word, and, being on a music station, people aren't really listening to what I have to say anyway. I also just correct myself and move on or just keep on going. I have to agree with the poster who said he apologized himself out of a job. He certainly called more attention to it by repeating himself and then apologizing over and over again.

It's been my experience that people who complain about "political correctness" are the very ones making poor use of free speech in the first place...unsurprisingly, P.C.'s 'victims' have usually been idiot right-wing hosts.

There's always a line to be crossed, and there's always consequences for crossing it. Deal with it. <P ID="signature">______________

It's the issue of "the line". Yes, there is a point of no return and it depends on how malicious the item is. Can you really say that his slip was viable for termination? Political correctness has hurt those things called honesty & truth because it has gotten so out of hand it makes people afraid to speak. Sometimes honety s**ks and the truth hurts but last time I checked life wasn't all blue skies and picket fences. When the "PC Police" start attacking Notre Dame for using "Irish" in a negative light, you have to start questioning if the cause has turned into a pandemic.

The PC issue has caused stations like that to dodge the honesty of a slip of the tongue. The station should have had multiple apologies for a slip of the tongue that, until it was pointed out, probably flew over 50% of the audience's heads. The station should have grown a pair, said "sorry if anyone misunderstood" and kept going. He slipped. Period. As you said, "Deal with it"

I heard this replayed multiple times on Opie & Anthony's show on XM. And honestly, until it was pointed out what he said, I totally missed it. I had no idea what he was apologizing for until they pointed out it sounded like he said "coon". He should have either ignored what he said and continued or corrected himself immediatly. If anyone called him on it, he could have easily replied that he said "coup" not "coon" and rolled on. He actually blew up his own spot. Although he did, he shouldn't be punished for immediatly recognizing his mistake and apologizing.

Anyone that listens can tell he almost soiled himself when he realized what his words sounded like.

Although I'm not a fan of political correctness (I prefer to call it "ideological intolerance"), I don't think it really played much of a role in Lenihan's firing. If anything, it played a secondary role. I really see it as being more of a business decision than a P.C. one. Given that roughly 20% of the St. Louis market is African-American, I can understand the alarm of the management over the possibility of offending that many people. 20% of the St. Louis market is almost 400,000 people, and all those 400,000 (and many more of other races) consider the word that was uttered to be offensive and inflammatory. When you look at the potential listeners, potential advertisers, and the even larger population of potential Cardinals season ticket holders, almost everyone probably finds that word offensive. That's a sizeable group of potential customers! So, I can understand why management decided a quick and decisive action was necessary. Now, I don't agree with the decision because, like I said, I've certainly made slips of the tongue as has everyone else, and this clearly sounded like a mistake and nothing more. However, I see a clear business motive in the firing no matter how misguided I think it was.

I was actually going to defend this guy until I heard the tape. What a jackass. He sounds like a babbling inexperienced sports dork. Not to mention, he couldn't have brought more attention to the slip than he did. He REALLY belabored the point and kept referring to it afterward.

Anybody that clueless as to how to react in that situation, does NOT belong on a large market station--no matter how dysfunctional 'TRS is historically.

That's absurd and demonstrates a lack of analytical ability on your part. No station would be fool enough to use the word "coon" as a publicity stunt. If word ever leaked that they exploited that inflamatory racial epithet for a "boost" there would be enough outcry to bring the organization to a financial hault.

Bad read.

The people who believe this was a bit, have some real shaky
reasoning skills, and frighten me more than anything. How
dumb can you be?. On the other hand, why is Al Brady Law
under the radar in this situation. He hired Lenihan, he knew
he had basically a very inexperienced host, who obviously
lacked a veteran broadcasters skill.

Ah, cheap shots are soooooooo easy when you have a pseudonym to hide behind...

If you continue to make assinine statements demonstrating your inept radio philosophy, perhaps you too should consider a screen name that is not your real name---that is if you have any hopes of a career out of the mini-minors.
