Leno Gone in 09

Published reports say that even if he has second thoughts, Jay Leno will be gone as host of the Tonight Show in 2009.

I wonder if Letterman will hang in there past 09 to see if he can regain the #1 postion that Leno has held for so many years?

Hardly breaking news since it was known for over a year that Conan would take over the program in two years.

The point I was making is that in the article it said that even if Leno was considering changing his mind and wanted to stay, NBC brass has told him he's gone in 09.

This is Leno-Letterman-Carson all over again.

Thursday's USA today reports that Leno is done with NBC, but may be open to working at another network.

EDIT: Apologies, replied to the wrong topic. Meant to get the one from just a couple weeks ago.

I heard that on this past Monday's "Headlines" segment, Leno showed a misprinted ad for his show from a newspaper that read something like: "Catch The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, late nights on ABC." And Jay said something like, "Wow, this must be an ad from the future!" ;D

I caught the same comment too. It's been widely speculated that ABC wants Leno. They'd like nothing more than to get rid of Nightline in favor of Leno's demos. Kimmel has a deal with ABC and would probably benefit greatly from a Leno lead in.

Not quite. I recall Leno himself has said that he's going to abide by the 2004 agreement to hand off duties for "The Tonight Show"; it doesn't bar him from working with NBC [Universal] in some other capacity that would necessitate a new contract. I don't think we're going to see Jay Leno pull a Brett Favre-like power move and give Conan O'Brien the short shrift, especially now that there's an agreement for Jimmy Fallon to take over "Late Night".

Leno's next "Beyondo" skit should be very interesting... :D

and what is what that new, horrible, and sleepy new 5-second network ID before "The Tonight Show" at 11:35. Has anyone noticed how bad it is. It's almost like NBC created it to piss Leno off. The other IDs were all uptempo.

Leno's been tripping over his jokes all week, not really focusing on some of the big topics that he usually would focus on.
He's clearly distracted.

Something's definitely up.

Or Jay is simply gonna play off ABC to get more money from any deal he can negotiate with NBC. Or any thing else from NBC he might want. Like for instance in the book "Three Blind Mice," the author reveals Carson repeatedly demanded his show "Amen" was kept on even though NBC didn't want it.

(He wasn't the only one Tartikoff had to deal with, who played him like that. Cosby did, Susan Harris did and the guy who developed "Family Ties" did as well.")

So it is definately in Leno's interst to keep all things open so he can negotiate better with NBC.

That new ID at 11:34:30 (not 11:35 - I know because I have to override my DVR to get the beginning of the Tonight Show) is created to blend in with NBC's current "chimed in" campaign, which uses a white background and red and blue lettering. It is the same music from the older ones, but with a different (softer) voiceover by the same announcer.

Jay probably has a lot going on. Jay leaving "The Tonight Show" was announced in 2004, five years ago. There should have been some time to deal with issues. I highly doubt he will stay with NBC Universal when all is said and done. Only time will tell.
