Leno Now 6-For-6 In Beating Letterman Since Return To Late Night

While they appear to be running neck-and-neck on the chart on the link below, Leno's "Tonight Show" holds a lead over Letterman's "Late Show" by at least 1 million viewers (adults 18-49).

http://tvbythenumbers.com/2010/04/15/jay-lenos-tonight-show-6-ratings-wins-in-6-weeks/48695

It appears Letterman's share fluctuates between 900,000 viewers and 1 million on any given week. However, Leno has shown no gains since his return to 11:35 PM last month. A week in which Letterman has all new shows while Leno presents reruns could be the game changer in this race.

I've always been a Letterman fan and will continue to be so. He's far more entertaining that Leno. The problem with Dave however is that he can be "caustic" at times while Leno (who I am sure is) comes across as a nice guy.

With that said, I believe that there has been a void in late night talk shows every since Johnny Carson retired back in 1992.

This is why I look forward to Conan coming back. It will be refreshing. Conan from 11 to 12 and then you can still watch 35 minutes of Letterman or Leno afterwards.

Letterman's show absolutely DRAGS at times. A few weeks ago, I was watching, waiting for a top 10 list, but first, I had to sit through an absolutely UNFUNNY skit by his announcer, that red-haired guy, doing a fake commercial for a product called "Cramp 911" or something like that. ::) Then before Letterman could get to the top 10 list, he was interrupted yet again by some dufus standing in the window behind him, speculating about when Dave would "come out." (This was right after Ricky Martin's "outing.") I remember absolutely screaming at the TV, "get on with the damn top 10 list already!" If they would get rid of all this other stupid b.s. on his show, it might flow better. As it is, I'm either watching Leno, or the syndicated programming on the Fox affiliate, or I'm turning the TV off, and going to bed!

I don't think there is any denying that the traditional network talk shows are becoming less relevant every year. This is perhaps why Conan's move to cable is smart. However, as long as David and Jay battle it out, there will be much revenue to split. Bottom line is I don't see either of them doing what they are doing in even five years. Question is, what will replace them? New talent, or new concepts?

Is Leno only doing 4 shows a week? He's had reruns the last two Friday nights, despite the rest of the week being all-new.

Leno is all-new tonight, Friday the 16th.

I think that stupid Top 10 list drags Letterman's show down. I never particullarly liked it. I always thought it might be a fun thing to do once every few weeks. But that's it. 20 years later they are still doing the thing every damn night. Talk about a comedy bit that has gone on Waaaaaaaaaaaayyyyy to long. I would have been a lot happier seeing Chris Elliott crawl out from underneath the seats for 20 years. At least that was always funny.

EDIT: Despite listings stating an all-new show, it was indeed a re-run tonight.

I've always found Conan to be boring, unlike Leno or Letterman, the delivery of his monologue is lacking. And his monologue is about the same length as Leno's or Letterman's and it just didn't pack the same punch. His monologue was even long when he was Late Night! Johnny Carson had required Late Night to not have such a big monologue and I'll have to agree with this. Every late night host does a monologue with the same jokes and the same punchlines. Why not just shorten it or go in the more Craig Ferguson direction of doing just a free form comedy routine?
However, on Leno vs. Letterman, this margin won't change much. Leno has his fans, Dave has his fans and Leno's always beaten Dave before the fiasco, he will continue too. Although he may not be matching what he did before, just look at everything else that's on TV during his timeslot. He's still doing alright

I think Leno may have set up some stand up gigs on these dates while Conan was still hosting 'Tonight'. He probably doesn't want to cancel them.

It was the same thing last Friday, it was listed as a new show, but then was a re-run when aired.

I think the decision to drag out his monologue on the Tonight Show was a very bad one and may have contribute to his low ratings before the whole Leno-Conan NBC mess began. When compared to his Late Night show, the monologues weren't as long and everything else flow much better as a result. Because the Tonight Show monologues ran long, there wasn't an extra non-guest segment that Conan's Late Night usually had towards the end of the show.

This is why you need a DVR box. ;D

At least Leno didn't get killed by his potential successor like Tom Bergeron maybe did (can't give away who dun it for those who haven't seen it).

Shameless plug ;) for Bergeron at the end of last week's "Dancing with the Stars"--he announced he would be the victim on 'Castle"!
