Leno or Letterman: Who has the more entertaining show?

For me, hands down Letterman. I have always been a fan of his, back to when he did stand up on Carson's Tonight Show.

His quick wit, the production of his show is top notch, the editing of his video bits are tight and on target.

Leno, is lame. softball questions, always has to tap the guest on the shoulder at some point, steals ideas (Headlines was Small Town News on Letterman, Having Howie Mandel disguise himself with a microphone hidden in glasses and a camera hidden in a hat, Letterman has done that years before with Rupert From Hello Deli!)

I can't give you an answer. I don't watch either one.
Then why did you respond? You're not required to, you know.

I've never been a fan of Leno's comedy, so my preference would be for Letterman. But to me, that's like saying I prefer hemorroids over colon cancer. Letterman's show used to be witty and original, but (in my opinion) it's been resting on its laurels for years now. On the occasions I tune in, I find that he's doing the same old bits...when he even bothers.

I know this is a minority opinion, but I think Conan's show is the most watchable - it's fresh and original. Of course, I rarely watched his old Late Night show on NBC, so perhaps its not as original as I think. And for the record, I thought Conan was sub-par on The Tonight Show. His new show on TBS is much better.
I just felt the need to put my two cents in.

Letterman here as well. Even though the show is not as good as the NBC show or even the early CBS shows they still beat Leno hands-down.

The couple of posts about Leno stealing Dave's ideas reminds me of a joke that Letterman's head writer Bill Scheft told a few years back. It was told a little something like this

"Phil Mickelson was on the Tonight Show after his Masters win with his green jacket. I'll have to check on this, but I believe that's the first original piece of material seen on that show since Johnny retired."

BTW, Dave is not the only one whose show was not nearly as cutting-edge after moving to an earlier time slot...it's happened to Conan as well. I guess that's what happens as the hosts get older and they're trying to appeal to an older audience who can't stay up 'til 12:30

I've described this before, but it really depends on my mood. If I'm in a somewhat jaded, sarcastic mood, it is Letterman all the way. If I'm happy, (or really tired), Leno does it for me.

Letterman is the "George Carlin" of the day, Leno is the "Bob Hope" of the day. (Though neither current host comes close to the talent of these superstars).

Can't watch either anymore. Dave's monologue seems to be written by George Soros (W is a moron, Bachmann is a nut, Palin is a redneck, Obama--Wait, we can't make jokes about him!) and Jay's is rejected Premiere Radio showprep. Those of like political mind in Dave's studio audience laugh at his monologue, while pretty much nobody in the studio audience laughs at Jay's. Jay was funny back in the day, and was one of Dave's best guests. Dave was at his best when he couldn't get A-list guests on a consistent basis and had to make do with people like Kamar The Discount Magician and Brother Theodore.

I agree with most everyone. Letterman was funnier in the 90s - and some of the Bush-bashing was ok in the 00s. Lots of his bits have gotten old for me now. But his whole show is better than Leno except guest booking. Leno's guests are a little more relevant to me.

I'm surprised Jimmy Kimmell hasn't gotten any comments, good or bad yet. Of the 3, I think his interviews are the best, but his monologue is the worst.

letterman was funnier in the 90`s and in the 80`s he was even greater.very much greater.

i miss that levil of comedic genious and extent of williness to be think outside the box.

I've tended to watch Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, Man V. Food, Pawn Stars, American Pickers, and Netflix more often in recent years. ::)

Neither of them ever. I prefer The Daily Show and the Colbert Report
