Les' Happy Goodbye

Usually when you hear about a radio personality leaving a station, it's because they've suddenly been let go. Suddenly they disappear. So, it was a happy time for station, staff and listeners of the morning show on AM 930 WEOL as Les Sekeley did his last show Friday 8/20. He's leaving on his own accord, and with the love and respect from the station still intact. I've listened to "Les In The Morning" almost every day as I drive to work. His last week of shows was something you just don't hear often in this jaded world ... genuinely sweet and heartfelt. I wish him and the station well.

That is nice. Usually when somebody leaves to move ahead or just to enjoy life you hear the person being trashed from various places.

This was good radio in more ways then one. It was true feel-good radio. Listener could leave with a positive feeling, a true smile on your face. During the week he had his daughter on and on the last day, his wife. There was a light, happy party atmosphere of friends getting together that included the listeners. No other station could touch this.

The very good news is that Les will be a full-time teacher for the Westlake schools. Plus, his successor, Jeff Thomas, has been deserving of a solo gig after just doing sports updates for Metro/WKNR for over 13 years, and now finally gets his chance to shine. Les and Jeff even were on together for Les' penultimate week, and that says a lot.

Again, you don't see that at all anymore.

The big difference here, of course, is that Les left WEOL for a non-media gig. That, and the folks up at ELB seem pretty decent.

Congratulations to Jeff on the new gig...as Nate noted, it is well deserved!

If Les had left for another media gig, I don't believe that the folks at WEOL would have trashed him on-air. Colleen O'Neill left WEOL for a news assignment job at WTAM, and every indication is that everybody was happy for her. As for Jeff Thomas, he had nice things to say about Les, which told me that Les had built quite a positive and deep relationship with the listeners. Jeff said that he plans to keep his new-found friendship with Les going. Jeff began building his relationships with the people of the area by joining Craig Adams at the Lorain County Fair.

Yep, as I said, the folks at ELB seem pretty decent.

The situation would have been at least a little different, though, if Les were going to WDLW/WOBL. If he were heading for radio over in Cleveland, it wouldn't have been much different.
