Les Lye dies

We Yanks only know him from YCDTOT, but he had a long and busy career in radio and TV "Up North" and, from the articles I have read, was quite a beloved personality and a genuinely nice fellow.

"uuuhhhh-I Heard That"

The often-uttered phrase by Les Lye after some teenagers complained about his "authority figure" characters on "You Cant Do That On Television", whether it be the School Priciapal, Father of any of the kid/teen characters, The show director or as Barth, the owner/operator of Barth's Burgery, the kids' after-school hangout..

Though I was very much an adult wthen Nick showed YCDTOTV in the 80's, the show was a guilty pleasure of mine..

I was just viewing my DVDs from the Slimecon conventions in 2002 and 2004 earlier this week. (Slimecon was an event initiated by fans, who held a "You Can't Do that on Television" cast reunion in Ottawa.) Re-viewing the DVDs prompted me to surf the Net and view Lye's vast professional resume.

This is a major loss! Lye was a very talented actor who had an uncanny ability to switch from one character to another. Like many kids growing up in the 80s, I had no idea all of those adult male characters were played by the same actor. In fact, it didn't dawn on me until a few years back when I had the chance to watch an episode after having not viewed the series in years.

Same here. ;) I liked Lye's swarthy-and-sunglassed-general-from-some-unspecified-banana-republic character (the one who was always about to execute one of the kids when they would holler for him to wait and then try to bamboozle and confuse him him with some convoluted illogic.) The various set characters, running gags, blackouts, catch phrases, etc. made the show reminiscent of Laugh-In. It was very well-produced and executed by both the adult and juvenile actors, and it is no wonder it was so popular.

I remember reading that Alanis Morrisette said she absolutely loved working with Lye as a kid, and that he was a great "father figure" to the cast, helping to keep order on the set, young egos in check, and providing advice as regards acting as well as life in general.
