Les Paul passes away at 94

There isn't much I can say that hasn't already been said about music pioneer Les Paul. His music is probably some of the most distinctive sound ever heard on the radio. Les was doing multi tracking, speed ups, slow downs and lots of other tricks with his guitar and the sweet voice of Mary Ford.

One of my earliest memories of Les Paul has a Buffalo connection. They did the Robert Hall commercials widely heard on the radio in the 1950's.

Arguably, rock music wouldn't exist without Les Paul's advancements with the electric guitar. Heaven knows what music would sound like without his development of the "close micing" technique with cardioid mics that allowed singers to be much more expressive than the old-school belters and big-room performers. Then there's multi-tracking...

Not to mention the fact that he was a hell of a player, who's riffs have been, are, and will be ripped off by guitarists of every genre.

RIP, Les. You deserve it. Thank you for leaving such a legacy.

I just watched a piece on Les Paul on CBS Sunday Morning. It showed a recent clip of him at his regular Monday night gig in NYC. Looking at the expression on his face while playing told the whole story. He just loved what he was doing. A man well into his 90's still doing what he did best and still the idol of his peers. What a lucky man.
