Less Is More...CLUTTER!

At KFWhyEye, they sell it by the seconds!

Less was supposed to be more according to the CCU suits, but the station is more cluttered than the glovebox of our '76 Gremlin! The last break of the Nearly Bald One's show is a groaner, followed by ten seconds for him to wrap things up before the 10am news. But crammed into the tight space between his signoff and the legal ID is a three second commercial. If you think that's pretty cluttered, catch the sales orgy between the end of the 10am news and El Rushbo! There are so many commercials in there, it's no wonder they join the Oxycontined One in progress many times.

Less is more. And Nurse Jeff sez the Cardinals will be in the Super Bowl this year!

"Less is more" is quite possibly the biggest scam ever to be laid at the feet of the average listener. KFYI is just one example: The 'dudeboss' changed the clocks at KFYI last November or so that all the shows have 2 decently long segments followed by a short segment at about :52-:55 past, then a one minute (usually turns out to be 20 seconds) segment at :59, this also applies to Xtra Sports 910. That 1 minute segment is a joke and even the 3-4 minute segment at :53 is a joke also... It waters down the content of the show and expects listeners to hang on through several breaks. KFYI has the ratings, so I guess they have the scoreboard--another fine indictment on their competition, but Akbar is absolutely right about the clutter. It seems ClearChannel has decided that a greater frequency of stopsets with fewer spots in each is a more palatable solution than fewer longer breaks, in talk radio that may be true, but what about their music stations.

Mix 969 will literally play 2 songs, a stopset, 3 songs, a stopset and then once or twice I've heard 1 song then a stopset--that's just egregious--just give me an excuse to listen to some other form of entertainment why don't ya. It's not to pick on Mix, KISSFM, KNIX, even KYOT are all the same. It is cluttered badly at CC.

commercial radio is a joke.

less is more should be sponsorships for the segment.

on chill..

client sponsorship v/o, voiced by client with no effects, will be dropped over non-stop music.

no stopsets!

very few people these days sit through the first 10 seconds of a commercial break. ..unless they're spacing out.

on chill, we'll hold the listener in the mix and intelligently let the listeners know what they're listening to and who's providing it.

it'll be much like pbs / npr.

less is more.

Stick around?? Not me. I have 3 ten button radios, and 4 five button radios.....all set for AM. As soon as a commercial comes on, I'm out of there. Now I don't even listen to the five button radios, except the one (Sony) that has a button to change bands. With AM, FM, TV and weather, it gives me enough choice. I haven't bought a radio with a tuning dial in 10 years. If I thought there would be 2 minutes of commercials, I might stick around. But I'm not going to sit through 4 or 5 minutes of commercials. And I consider the "fillers," like "Bruce will be back in 60 seconds" as just another commercial.

do you listen to commercials?

Yes I do. Do I listen to every commercial? Nope. Have I punched out a commercials, looking for a good driving tune, Yes I have. I've gotten good leads for goods and services from radio commercials...and there are some very clever campaigns that I have always enjoyed. Because so many of the same advertisers - local and national - seem to spend money year after year on radio advertising, I suspect it must work. May not be as efficient as it used to be (for some) but evidentally it works for many. HOWEVER - I do agree that "LIM" may mean fewer minutes of commercials, but usually means more overall commercials, and I don't think that's good. And I think Arbitrons study shows that a people are tolerant of a block of commercials - UP TO A POINT.

Glad to see there are some people who are seeing the reality of LIM.

Here in Ohio where I live, I have monitored CC stations playing as many as 27 units in a morning drive hour...
15-19 is typical outside of morning drive.

Still, some research indicates people want more stops per hour with fewer units per set. Most often from what I've seen, though...this is not the case with LIM.

Occasionally, I've even caught them promising a "return to the music in 2 minutes or less", followed by as many as 3 1/2 minutes of spots. Go figure.

Nurse Jeff and I wonder if El Rushbo's people will bring this to the attention of the Dudeboss? Almost everytime KFWhyEye steps on the Oxycontined One's voice because they're cramming 20 pounds of crap into a five pound bag! Less is More Clutter for sure!

Bad enough to run shows on tape delay, INEXCUSABLE to rejoin late in tape delay. Anyone ever heard of a 'pause' button? Yes yes, I know, it would interfere with the real time playback of the show... but hey, who cares when you're on tape delay.

I often get to radio surf during the 12:00pm quarter hour.

BTW, who wants that diary entry? Send your checks to O.F., Box 6479... ;D

Anyway, I have yet to hear El Rushbo's theme from the top when the third
hour starts at 12:06-something, whether it be winter live or summer delay.
It's always a KFYI JIP, faded up somewhere in progress.

Unlike WMAL Washington, where I did hear it in full, in the clear, one noontime
last year.
