LESS SOAPS = MORE PROFIT FOR ABC, CBS

http://daytimeconfidential.zap2it.c...ytimes-replacement-shows-to-cost-under-575000

This article points out that ABC will save a ton of money by replacing expensive soaps with much
cheaper "CRAP". Althought THE TALK has lower ratings for CBS than AS THE WORLD TURNS, it is
easier to produce and making more money.

Being a game show fan, I can only wonder if they would be even cheaper to make. Guess we will
have to wait for the next great game show to appear in afternoons, for every network to attempt
to try to clone it, just as they seem to be doing with all these "CRAPY" talk shows which look a lot like the morning shows (in the afternoon). THAT'S IT! Let's all do the Today Show from 8AM to 4PM daily
and call it THE DAY SHIFT.

Re: FEWER SOAPS = MORE PROFIT FOR ABC, CBS

Sounds like it's time for a television revival of "Monitor"........

What were the last successful new game shows on daytime network TV when they first came out?
They can't be revivals of earlier incarnations (Price is Right revival in 1972 for example).

1976 Family Feud
1973 The $----- Pyramid
1975 Wheel of Fortune
1978 Card Sharks

The game shows were getting supplanted by the then-popular soap opera genre in the 80s.
I can't think of any since 1978.

Why not take the syndicated game shows - Wheel/Jeopardy, Millionaire, and Family Feud and make them network game shows?

Because the producers are making more money via syndication? All were network shows at one time.

The 70's were certainly the "Golden Age" of modern game shows.

Yea, the 70s had a lot of game shows. The spring of 1975 had 19 daytime network game shows at once, a number not to be seen again. I think most of them that didn't last a year were at best marginal. Some were just awful and were mercifully gone within three months.

Here's the thing: The old soap opera business model is broken. But the concept of TV based on strong characters and human interaction isn't. The problem is the cost. But you can do the same kinds of story-line shows with out the expense. Perhaps not in New York City. Perhaps not with established cast. But I foresee a day when someone will bring back these kinds of daytime dramas in a more cost-efficient manner, and they will succeed.

One could argue that what you describe has already happened in the form of reality shows. Are programs like "Real Housewives" or "the Real World" not a reality version of a soap opera? Sure, they aren't scripted, but they have strong characters and continuing storylines, yet they are still fairly inexpensive to produce. I'd expect to see even more shows pop up like this and eventually supplant the few remaining "traditional" soap operas.
