Lesson to be learned from DC Douglas

As the title says, there is a lesson to be learned for all of us from what is happening to DC Douglas, the former Geico VO guy. No, not talking about his politics. The fact that he felt the need to call a political organization with an asinine comment (I'm sure he thought it was tongue-in-cheek), and leave his number was mistake #1. The fact that he put out a video to answer the criticism only dug a deeper hole (and wasn't very funny either). Mistake #2. THEN, like a fool, went on with Geraldo to defend the indefensible. Mistake #3.

It was stupid upon stupid and he deserves everything that's happening. Again, not because of his politics. It was just plain stupid and indicative of his generation not understanding the concept of consequences.

Going forward, I doubt any client will want to be associated with him. And if your earning power dries up, you run the risk of your agent dropping you. For the record, yeah, I've said stupid stuff before and felt the sting. But this is colossal career suicide and a lesson for anyone in any business to think before you act. Clearly he did not. Now he is toast. Sad.

By the way, DC. If you're thinking you could always go back to radio...newsflash, pal...they ain't hiring.

I'm thinking that there may/will be some ideological fellow travelers who would love to have him, either on the cheap, or because of his "street cred", or as an act of charity.

Thinking longer-term, these kinds of things do blow over. Look at Mel Gibson (also proof that it's not a generational thing). Look at the Greaseman--he has more lives than a cat.

Especially since DCD wasn't THAT famous to begin with. He puts on a pseudonym and no one's the wiser (at least no one who matters).

Depending on the circumstances, contrition (or the lack thereof) can have a bearing on how long your rehab takes. It all depends on how un-P.C. you were and who all is clamoring for a pound of your flesh, and whether those pious flesh-grabbers truly have a bearing on your success.

We've been talking and we are wondering..
Was he just one of the "regular" announcers that does tags? Or, is the "Character" voice of the lizard?

He was the slightly nasal "for a free quote..." guy, not the English gecko.

To the OP. I don't think DC Douglas ever worked in radio. He's been in LA for a long time.

Also, your post is very funny. You keep saying it's not about his politics, but DJ man from Georgia, it's obvious he hit a sore spot with you. Check out Salon or HuffPo and you'll see 4000 commenters in support of him.

But, I think the best thing I read was about how he got a lot of new clients because of FreedomWorks McCarthy tactics. (Heard about that on NPR - you know, the commie channel).

Yeah, he did work in radio. Thank you for proving my point that there's always someone who wants to make something out of nothing. The original comment was about his ability to make money and nothing else. But when you quoted a couple of "news" outlets, I saw where you're coming from and realized you will never get it. So good luck with that.

And you confirmed my point about your bias, as well. We're even on that one.

However, in every bio I've read about the guy there is NO MENTION of EVER working in radio. Having a commercial on radio is NOT WORKING IN radio. He was never a DJ.

By the way, have you seen his pinko response to the silliness? It's quite awesome: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMUVFctJ2Xw

Hey Mitchell...

So they're only "news" outlets when their perspective on the news agrees with yours?

Sheesh.

Huh? You clearly don't get it. The original post was NOT about the content but about the wisdom of doing what he did as it affects his income. Nothing more.
