Let the pontificating begin: Kicks vs. Bull

Do you think it's a given that the former Eagle listeners will migrate over to Kicks, as I'm sure their management assumes so? Keep in mind that the latest trend shows the Bull only .8 behind them now.

I, for one, do not. I think Kicks is in for a big shock, and soon.

I've noticed that Bull has gotten heavy on the "sort-of-classic" country (80s/90s)...their playlist is much improved with fewer country/AC x-over posers...methinks that Kicks will get Kicked.

Tom Taylor's column today quotes a consultant as saying:

Citadel had the Bull on the ropes, between Kicks 101.5 and Eagle 106.7.” Now – Kicks is still there, though minus some key staffers and presumably with a smaller promotional budget. And Eagle has gone to the place where raptors go when they’re no longer wanted. On top of that, the new Cledus morning show is demonstrating some early growth in the latest Arbitrends – and there’s even talk about Clear Channel syndicating the onetime Tampa-based comedian and new radio star. Clear Channel’s “Bull” WUBL (94.9) has been looking for traction since they flipped it from soft AC Lite. Now – it’s pawing the ground, thanks to Citadel.

As far as Eagle listeners moving to Kicks or The Bull, one advantage Kicks has is Dallas McCade on the morning show. She was a favorite of Eagle listeners.

But between the downgrade in Kicks talent overall and the shooting of the Eagle, The Bull is bound to gain something.

Yep. A lot of listeners also had 106.1 WNGC(north/east) and 107.1 WTSH (north/west) on their presets as alternative selections. Both tend to benefit greatly from this.

Kicks has enjoyed a good run, with literally no competition for the past 25-26 years. Like others have posted here, Cadillac Jack isn't a morning personality and teaming Dallas McCade with him isn't going to provide the magic bullet. Years ago the two of them did a weekend shift on Y-106 and it was kind of a tune-out with their inside humor, giggling and striving to be cute. I don't think that crap will cut it today since we've got more than one country music radio choice.

Though I don't listen much to country, I enjoyed WNGC's Saturday Night Country Gold after the UGA Football games and the Fifth Quarter show with Kevin Butler. They have been by far one of the best country stations going back to their days on the 95.5 frequency and have always been a well-programmed station. Cox would be very smart not to tinker with this station when they assume ownership soon. Listeners of Eagle in the NE Metro area shouldn't fret too much with WNGC still going strong.

It was country WBIE before that...which makes 101.5 how many years as ATL's original country FM? At least 30--35? 40? Definitely a contender for the longest running station in the ATL with a single format (not counting freeform stations like WREK--but WREK is only 36 years old themselves)

WKLS (Project 9-6-Rock) has been some form of AOR for 34 years (since 1974; IIRC they were classical or Beautiful Music before that).

To be fair, Star 94Q has floated among album rock, top 40, and AC over the last 30+, so I wouldn't call them one format-close, but no cigar.

Doesn't Eagle's demise leave WNGC with the only live classic country show in the area?

I mentioned the last time I visited this board that WNGC has A LOT to gain with WYAY out of the Country picture. It'll be interesting to see how Cox will approach the "open field" when they assume the reigns in the Spring.

According to Marshall Leach's Atlanta Radio 1968 Time Warp, 101.5 (WBIE/WKHX) has been country since February 1968. http://users.ece.gatech.edu/~mleach/radio/warp/1968.html That's 40 years. For a commercial FM station that's the record (WABE has been on with the same format for longer still).

I guess it depends what you classify as 'the area,' but 92.5FM The Bear in Senoia (licensed to Zebulon, formerly studioed in Griffin) covers all of the south-metro area, including Douglasville and Jonesboro, and also gets into Covington and Candler with some good fringe even farther into Atl.

<shameless plug>Tune in Saturday night for Country Legends Roadhouse - classic country, plus the stories behind the songs, as well as 'Country Music news from the Past', a feature artist and a feature year, plus special guests.</shameless plug>

- in answer to your question, of course. ;)

WREK just celebrated its 40th anniversary WREKtacular last Saturday. BUT, WREK was Top 40 for the first 2-3 years, then AOR for a few years after that.

Dr. Leach, whose website you linked to, was WREK's technical advisor for years, but he quit a few years ago and inexplicably deleted ALL references to WREK from his website. Just because we weren't in his 1968 time warp doesn't mean we weren't around!

I read recently in Lon Helton's Country Aircheck that the Bull recently added Bob Kingsley's 'CT40', but isn't South 107 still carrying 'CT40' as well?

I think you guys have it all wrong... Kicks will pull it out and kill the Bull. How can anybody listen to Judd? I can't even understand him and the crying and praying on the radio has been done by Moby and Rhubarb. Where are they now? People in Atlanta are to smart and don't want there kids thinking that bad grammar is the way of the future. We have survived ebonix and we will survive neckisms...
