Lets be Fair to KDWN

I see mred always busting kdawn's chops to be fair to 720 they are not willing to overpay for talent in a unfreindly radio ad market like Las Vegas 840/CBS corp is paying loads of money to keep talent which reflects in their ad revs not matching the cost of contracts for Hannity&Limbaugh plus they had to take on Levin in order to keep Hannity if KDWN wasnt making anything they would have dropped the format a long time ago but I suggest KDWN go back to the biz model that Claire Reese and Mr Williams created for KDWN because I have a feeling when they owned them they were making more money than the current ownership!

I find it hard to believe that KDWN under the old ownership made a lot more money than today. The last several years under Williams/Reese KDWN didn't run any spots, except for trade out. Although I heard they charged a premium for the many infomercials they aired.

With all the spots and sponsorships they are running I would guess KDWN makes more money today, although the overhead is a lot higher than under the old ownership. They could bill more if they had any type of ratings at all. Was anyone else surprised that little KDOX beat KDWN in the FEB extrap?

After 18 months of Beasleys KDWN would anyone welcome this lineup to KDWN 5-9a Ken Stahl and Hart Kirch 9a-12 Truman Hawkins !2=3 Jim Dallas who is too good to just giving traffic reports,3-7 Savage remains and rules.7-9 Various hosts Dr. Landau ,Harvey Hyde etc. 9-11p Roy Masters pays and stays, 11p-5a Part time Pete Moss. With the Beasley production elements and total news coverage this lineup would reamain steady with today or increase listeners with that good local feel.

U can make fun of me Nic thats ok I understand u work 4 kdwn and your just carrying the water bucket for ur employer! Jay just because kdwn is playing alot of 1min spots doesnt means they are making more than the old ownership. I knew Donna Lee she was the only Account Exec that old KDWN had and make fun of all the Infomercials/ Brokered shows you want they I seen their some of the billing they made real good money. The overhead was next to nothing & all the on air hosts worked as host, board op,production, traffic & quazi engineers which were all paid by the hour. With all the work the new ownership put into kdwn the ratings are still the same as the old kdwn but with 10 times the overhead and payroll so who is the real dummy in this equation.

A year and a half later, and we've still got people longing for the old hosts. That really says something about the hosts' connection with the audience, however small that audience was.

That said, it's silly to "backseat PD" to that extent. There are plenty of baseball players I'd like to have on my favorite team, but constantly complaining that we don't go out and get Alex Rodriguez isn't going to get me anywhere.

Maybe TRN forces KDWN to carry Doyle live as a condition of keeping Savage. I'm sure no PD would WANT to run Roy Masters, so there's something going on there. Maybe some of the old hosts don't want to work in a corporate environment or learn how to use computers and automation systems. And what about looking to the future? Beasley knows that Hart, Ken, and Tru, and Pete aren't going to be around forever.

Joey, I'm not trying to jump on you but in the 10 million threads about KDWN on this board there are 5 million talking about the old hosts. I'd love to hear more local programming on all the Las Vegas talk stations, but let's be realistic.

And, as far as the money thing goes, I'd wager that the lawyer-sponsored traffic that is also sponsored by someone else brings in plenty of cash - not to mention the fact that they still run infomercials.

I can remember Roy Masters on KDWN back in mid 80s running from 12-1am preceding Art Bell who was then on 1-6am from the studio on 1 Main, Roy Masters and his son Mark own and run TRN and have had a long relationship with Williams /Reis and this apparently has carried over to Beasley which runs Roy Masters 2 hours now ,KDWN one of first to carry Savage when syndication roll out began and is home base for Jerry Doyle . Add it up Savage live for 3 ,first hour replay, 4am replay, Masters 2 hours, Doyle 3 hours, Phil Henrie 3 hours adds up to TRN supplying KDWN with 13 hours of weekday programing. It seems the Masters clan just likes being able to air on one of the most powerfull signals in the west regardless of its ownership.

I'm not in radio, I'm in healthcare (endoscope anyone?) So don't take it so seriously. People like to talk about eating establishments too. Maybe since 1140 went sports, kdwn can pick-up O'Reilly? He's on in LA on KABC. While I think he's a phoney, Tru Hawkins is still doing a lot of commercials on kdwn, using his name...and he's doing voice over work all over the country...he must have some popularity if the advertisers keep using him?

I haven't heard the strip club ads lately, don't tell me they lost another one?

Kdwn would be better if they where like kgo in sf, with a range of views, instead of voices you don't know.
