LETS DISCUSS WLAN JOHN ST. JOHN

All of us back in the old days heard John St. John (I think his real name was Greg ?) on the airwaves. I was always impressed with his pipes and delivery and remember him like it was yesterday on WLAN FM. Somewhere I still have an aircheck laying around of him doing the PSA intro/outro for "Speak Out on the Issues".

I was pretty young back in the days of WKBO, but still remember Slim Jim and a few of the others from there. I see on a tribute page that there was a John St. John who worked there in the 70s. Is this the same one or another using the same moniker?

JSJ at WLAN was one of the reasons I got into radio. I always tried to imitate his voice, but never could very well. LOL

The John St. John at WKBO and the one at WLAN are two different people. The KBO JSJ was there from 1973-78. The WLAN JSJ stole his name from the KBO JSJ. KBO JSJ left in July of 1978 for KSD St, Louis and later went on to Nashville, Philly and New Orleans where today he run Airlift Productions. The WLAN JSJ started at Q106 in August of 1978. He went by Jack Fitzgerald the first week he was on Q106 and then magically changed his name to "St. John" to try and confuse listeners that the other JSJ had gone from KBO to Q106. Talent wise, there was no comparing. The KBO JSJ had a better voice, stronger personality and more creativity than the imitator. He could relate one-on-one better than just about any jock I've ever heard and he did it without rambling. He was a large part of KBO's success. The WLAN JSJ was not bad, but more of a liner guy.

I could not have said it any better than this! "The One Saint That Ain't" was the one jock who inspired me the most during KBO's legendary days. After St. John left, there were several who tried to "be" him, but none ever quite captured his "often candid, but never crude" delivery. ;)

The wannabes tried to imitate St. John's voice and style. What they really missed was his intellect, he creativity. If you've ever talked to the guy, you'd realize what a genius he is. If you've heard him on the air, you'd know what a wordsmith he is. He did tons of prep to make every break just right.

WKBO's John St. John was the most creative Jock I ever had the pleasure to work with. I have met countless radio people through the years that credit the "Saint" as an inspiration to them and their careers. Kudos to Bob Alexander who found him, hired him, and taught him the building blocks of great personality radio.

I would have been between the ages of 7 and 12 when the original JSJ was at KBO, so while I can't remember his shows, I can say that I just listened to the aircheck on the tribute page and I have to agree, he was excellent! I heard alot about JSJ from Gary Magill who use to be the engineer at KBO and worked with me at WHPA. Funny thing was I always thought "both" JSJs were one in the same until now.

My mom had some businesses in Lancaster in the late 70s, so we would travel down every weekend. I have always loved radio even as a kid and as we would get near Harrisburg and onward to our destination, I would do the flipping of the dial checking all the stations & jocks out in Hbg, Lanc, York, etc, and of course, I always listened to FM97 when I was down there, so the 2nd JSJ was the one I always heard.

P.S.
Hey Dan, I remember when you were on mornings at Sunny 99. I listened to you while I was in college (mid 80s) at E-town. You have a good set of pipes too!
