This board has been so dead lately so how about......
Who do you think are some of the best local jocks in Cincinnati?
And Why?

If Gary Burbank is still considered a jock, he gets my vote as the best. We will never see another one like him, with the current state of radio. He has a great sense of comedy, and what other jock can pay homage to blues music like Gary. As far as those who play music, I would go with Jay Gilbert from WEBN, Duke Hamiltonfrom WUBE, and Jim LaBarbara and Chris O'Brien from WGRR, veterans, who in my opinion still sound as good as they did 25 or 30 years ago.

Does anyone remember Jim Stanley on 700? Like Jim and Chris.

I still enjoy listening to Duke Hamilton when I get back to visit the family. I also like Tony Finnell on MOJO. Jim Scott is still as smooth as ever.
Back in the day, I enjoyed listening to Mark Sebastian and JC McCoy (the latter I got to meet when I attended OCB when it was the Connecticut School of Broadcasting). Janeen Coyle and Kelly St. James were my favorite female jocks.

I enjoyed listening to a George Morgan on 99.5, it used to be Classic Country until May of this year. Every morning driving to the city of Cincinnati, I would wake up and hear the best hits of country. He might have had a really nasal voice, but he knew classic country.. I believe he has been in broadcasting for over 25 years. I miss him and i miss classic country 99.5.

How about Bobby Leach, until he became a traffic reporter for 55krc.

I agree. One of the most underrated talents in this city, but liked and respected by anyone who's ever worked with him. Too bad he doesn't get more air time.

How about Brian Douglas? Is he still on Q? I've been away from Cincinnati for about a year and when I am there I don't listen to it, but I always thought he was good.

My vote for the best local morning show ever? The Brian and Jon-Jay morning show.

Jim Scott sounds too fake, too many commercials during the show and all of the 'live' interviews he does sound very very fake. I am living in Atlanta now but listen to WLW on the way to and from work.

I always liked the crew on WGRR. Ron Schumacher sounds like he really enjoys his work. Chris can hit a straight line out of the park at will, and he and Janeen work well together. Prof sounds great when he does his artist homework. When JC McCoy was on there as the traffic guy, he was hilarious. They all sounded like they were having fun, in the best tradition of the old WSAI back in the late 60s. Haven't heard them as much lately, but in the late 90s, they had it goin' on.
Edited by Inventor989 on 10/20/05 02:16 PM.

Bobby Leach - YES. Clear Channel traffic - NO.

Agreed. Bobby Leach is an underrated and underused talent in this city. He is really good with Jerry and Craig in the mornings. He always has an interesting and witty take on whatever those two are talking about. And his traffic reports are solid and well done.

Not to rap on John Phillips, but Bobby does a much better job. I like John a lot, but he seems only a shadow of his former self when he used to be in the air. Now he sounds uninspired and stammers a lot. But what can you expect when you've been grounded due to cost-cutting and now spend more time reading sponsorship commercials than reporting on the traffic itself. Poor John. I've heard him have to work in two to three sponsors in one report. I just don't like hearing the traffic guy reading a commercial for Papa John's Pizza and then closing with "and that's Argosy Casino traffic on 700 WLW." Enough already!

i've enjoyed listening to gary since 1983 when i travelled insurance. his comedy can be gentle as well as blunt, depending on the topic, and which persona gary is using to illustrate his point--ie gilbert g-n-a-r-l-e-y, big fat, or earl pits, un-meer-i-kan. since i don't live in in area where i can pick gary up easily, how long has gary been at the BIG ONE? and referring to another thread, when did wlw switch from mor to full service talk?-david5258
