Let's just call it like it is... KPHO ain't working

Nothing personal but....

I remember when Kent Dana was a weekend anchor on Channel 10 in the 1970s. He was lured over to Channel 12, but did not immediately produce high ratings for them.

In fact, Channel 12 can directly trace their ratings surge to the mid-1990s network switches that affected just about every station except for Channel 12. Dana had been with 12 for more than a decade by that point, so viewers weren't watching 12 just because of him.

So when KPHO hired Kent away from 12 a few years ago and paid him a huge salary to make the switch, it was with the assumption that Dana would bring viewers with him; something he had never proven able to do.

The most recent ratings would indicate that virtually nobody cares who's anchoring at KPHO.

I can't claim to understand why people choose one station over another (except that channel 3 is hopeless fluff right now and not worth watching), but I bet if you plugged Mark Curtis into Channel 5 right now, their ratings wouldn't budge; and neither would 12's for that matter.

People just aren't as into the minor celebrity factor of local anchors anymore. But apparently Phoenicians have gotten used to not watching Channel 5 news, and some things never change. It's too bad, because they actually do a pretty good job.

Good job compared to what? You rightly slammed channel 3 for being "The Place With More Fluff" but honestly I don't see a huge difference between 3 and and the others (5, 10, 12 and 15). There is virtually nothing they produce in their "news" features of importance to me that hasn't already been said on any or all of the national feeds. And, they are just about as non-relevant as the newspaper as anything that has happened that day has already been on the 'net in a number of different immediate sources (or even on CNN/MSNBC etc.).

I fully understand the stations make a ton of money with their "news" and that's probably the only reason they keep news staffs. It certainly isn't the content.

Move along folks....nothing to watch here.

This thread jogged me a bit so tonight I turned on KPHO for the C(BS) Evening News with Katie (In)correct and the first lead-in was this:

School is out! Your teen can volunteer....etc., etc.

For anyone not having school-age kids you need to know that this was the week virtually every primary and secondary school in Maricopa County was back in session. This advert was at least TWO months old!

Even my old high school radio station didn't make mistakes like this.

Oh, and BTW, I stayed tuned to Katie for half her show which consisted of rehashed account of the anthrax killer, an "in-depth" account of the K2 climbing disaster (wonder how many Arizonians were on that trip?) and the BIG lead-in story on Paris Hilton's video reply to the John McCain which featured her.

Oh, there was also a story about how Iraq isn't using its oil money to finance its reconstruction. I guess there is the occasional hard news story.

And they wonder why their news programs are circling the drain.

Was clicking through the newscasts last night, and came across Channel 5.

Maybe their new set will attract more viewers??!?!? :D

Now, speaking for myself only, I would say that time is a big factor in when to watch news. I normally watch Channel 5 at 6:30 (Hobson's Choice, some would say), and I always watch Channel 10 at 9, unless there is a show I love that's playing on another channel. I don't watch a particular news program because someone is on there.

However, some of the other posters here are right about one thing as well: content is, of course, very important. That is why I avoid Channel 15, because of its "You will die tomorrow! ZOMG! Miss and DIE!!!!!" coverage on many issues (similar reasoning for Channel 3. I find their news to be full of useless info.)

Now, I'm not saying watching TV news is an escape from reality, but is it necessary for Channel 15 to remind people of the dangers outside, to a point where one should just padlock their doors, nail shut their windows with steel panels, and hide under a mattress as if the end of the world is coming? Now, I know Channel 15 has nothing on WSVN in Florida (they are much worse), but still...

That is why some news stations flourish, and some fail.

I traveled extensively throughout the 80's and 90's in this country and watched all sorts and manner of local TV news and I've got to say I never saw, consistently, one that was really worth watching.

I was living in Westchester County, NY when WABC began its "happy news" format. Seems it all went downhill from there.

Sorry, newschannel, hate to pop your protective indoor bubble but, as 15 would happily point out, that mattress you're hiding under is very flammable, off-gases dangerous volatile cancer-causing chemicals, and is full of bedbugs and microscopic dust mites. Not to mention YOU COULD SMOTHER YOURSELF. Millions die from this every single day.

AWWW...THERE IS NO ESCAPE! Oh, wait...I could just change the channel. I feel better now.

OK, we get it LANDTUNA...you don't like local news....move on!

What I said was I don't like what stations pass for local news....and it doesn't seem to matter where in the country the station(s) is/are located.

Neither old time radio nor TV was as useless. Modern radio and TV don't have to be either.
